Thanks for this. I was interested in the RPG for a while and ended up getting in on the most recent BackerKit campaign for the expansions (where I'll be getting the main book too). Ironically, one of the most wholesome TV shows ever made, THE WALTONS, which was shown on US TV from 1972 - 1981, was also set in these mountains.

Now to drop a couple Cartoon Network references that came to mind: I can't help think of Granny Squidbilly saying "Too many bears. Ease up on the bears." As well as your rulers are basically the main characters of We Bare Bears.

I would probably just call it Breland (stolen from Eberron). You could even still spell it Bearland and just make the mispronunciation "correct".

I think the 50 gp cost makes sense if you consider (1) free public libraries plausibly may not exist in a fantasy world (certainly not in the middle ages), so most libraries are either privately owned or managed by a closed institution such as a monastery; (2) the info you're looking for might well be quite obscure or niche, so who's to say you even know which book or document you're looking for, so you're casting a wide net exploring many different avenues; (3) even if you did know what specific book you're looking for, it's entirely possible any given anonymous library might not have it, so you need to consider multiple options; and most importantly (4) mechanically speaking, this is the one downtime activity most likely to just short-circuit and advance the plot: you're rolling dice to get a clue, so you don't want to make it trivial to spam that.

Should have the native polar bears hating the new bears that are fleeing persecution, blaming them for the plagues. They native bears are wrong of course but as we’ve seen today, it’s totally something that will happen. So we can add civil unrest to the expansionist reasons. Nothing unifies a country like a common enemy somewhere over the border.

Planning a pirate themed campaign and I’m loving the Captains & Cannons homebrew guide for naval combat! However I have some questions for things I’m a bit confused about: 1) Movement: you and your crew use Sail actions to give the ship speed each round. However, does this mean if you didn’t take the Sail action on your next go that the ship would come to a complete stop at 0ft per round? 2) Crew Bonus: I like the idea of Crew Bonus as it saves a lot of individual rolling for the DM. However, how does it work in terms of Sail/Operate actions? Let’s say you have a crew of 12 and a party of 3. Your crew bonus would be +4 if you amalgamate them. But if you set yourself to a cannon and the rest of the crew to Operate 4 other cannons, it says you just add half of the damage dice on top of your own cannon damage roll…? Do you do that for each cannon? It’s not very clear. Sailing I’m assuming you’d have to split them up to several different sail sections in order to accumulate more movement speed, rather than setting them all to Sail and rolling once with a +4? But let me know if I’m wrong

in regards to learning an item's "last known location," there's always room to be more creative than "It's on display in a museum" or "it's in this orc fortress" It could be something more interesting, like saying "The records say that King Elfonse gifted the Sword of Kas to the captain of his royal guard. When Captain Brant retired, he took the sword with him and traveled east across the ocean toward his ancestral homeland of Zentim." It makes for more of a hunt rather than pointing to a dungeon on top of a volcano and waving the players along lmfao

Love the 'Mock Animal' chain reaction, conjure 8 giant bats in a ring 30' up, a couple grapple & lift the enemie(s) into the ring & they attack each other for 16d4 radiant, 8 chances to blind, then a 30' fall to land prone on the ground. Warning: DMs will understandably hurt you bad if you do this

"Oh, it says 'Distribute 6 initial points'" and then proceeds to distribute 9 points. I love Mr. T! The character creator is amazing. The fact that you edit everything, you can add something by name and it automatically finds the rules to complete the details, you can export as PDF and for Foundry. All of it because MCG embraces the work made by the community to take it even further.

Ah yes you could but everything in the book is written for the Cypher system so you’d need to come up with monsters ect for 5e. Since it’s an alternate history setting, non of the 5e classes will make any sense. You’d need to take a look at some of those games for 5e and use that on this setting.

OMG why are there not PREGEN characters of EVERY Subclass (not just the SRD subclasses) - one version per tier - in EDITABLE format so you can switch out a FEAT if you wanted to. It's stupid they don't have FLEXIBLE PREGENS for the players. Also, they should have a sample spell list with tiny spell summaries. You wanna know what limits the size of D&D? It's THIS!
