A very honest effort to appreciate a difficult book. I find some guys on the comments section not happy about Amelia’s perspective here, but pl give her some space. Sometimes it’s a pleasure to come across innocent and spontaneous reactions to work of art and her’s falls into the category.. Fowles’ novels, particularly this one, is very complex as he plays not only with time but with intense socio psychological themes. They say English novels do not measure upto the depth found in their continental counterparts, particularly when you take those created by Gogol, Balzac, Stendhal, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Flaubert or Proust. For me the one coming closest to that standard would be French Lieutenant’s Woman. To Amelia, 1963 may seem to you a long time ago, but that was right within the e and technology most happening period in human history both in terms of science and technology ( space missions, icbm, initial i etc) and of deep social changes borne out of aggressive social movements( women’s lib, civil rights, height of Cold War, on set of Vietnam, Beatles, global students’ unrest etc. The definition of morality and basic human relationships never went through such jolts as in the 1960s. No wonder Fowles took inspiration from all of it to dig into the hubris and of Victorian morality at the time. The interesting lines at the beginning of each chapter more than explain it.

"A symptom of wealth..." Victorian times was slower paces. "A tranquil boredom; whereas modern times is like a destructive neurosis" Wow, that aged well for 50 years past - pure insanity now. But you made me want to read this intriguing book after watch it on YT. Thank you.

@@leeah8419 Thanks for being honest again. The film is no less complex than the book. Harold Pinter, the famous British playwright, split Sarah’s character right down the middle to create the Victorian Sarah Woodruff and the modern star Ms Ruffwood. Mark the play with the surnames which sets the tone to visually narrate the psychological drama of Fowles. Not many would have the insight into the film medium to truly appreciate the movie.

As a big historical fiction reader myself, I can’t help but agree with you. More often than not, the dual timeline is a hindrance to the overall book. There’s always an exception to the rule, and some stories work well. But the more his fiction I read, the more I’m realizing the same thing. I felt this strongly in Lisa Wingate’s book The Book of Lost Friends. Totally separate stories.

Glad I provided you with a lightbulb moment! I also prefer when historical fiction is only set in one timeline. I'm starting to think a lot of authors feel forced to have some kind of reveal in their books that we don't see coming as readers. But adding all these extra things, mysteries like you describe, side stories, things in the past, things in the future etc etc. And all these things just take away from the story. Less is more. Also yes loved Atonement.

I agree that multiple timelines don’t always work, especially when they are too distinct. I am currently reading a historical novel with multiple timelines. Each chapter is subdivided in three subchapters, for the grandmother, the mother, and the daughter. The timeline of the grandmother and the mother is the 1840s, and that of the daughter is the 1890s. But the grandmother and mother are present in the 1890s too, so the storylines are linked in an obvious way. So far (about 50 pages) I quite like it.

I must be different than other people because I like to read books set in a season other than the one I'm in. When it is cold outside, I don't like to read books set in winter because it makes me feel cold. So I tend to choose the opposite season if I am being deliberate in those kinds of choices. Mostly I don't pay attention to the season of the book, but I have noticed that many booktubers seem to read seasonally. Nothing wrong with that.
