Congrats on cracking 1000 subscribers! Looks like your channel is starting to take off! What books and sites did you use to prepare for your Northwest Passage sail? Cornell's "World Cruising Routes" only devotes a single page to the NWP. I have the NGIA sailing directions for the Arctic Ocean (pub 180), but wonder if there are other good reference texts for modern boaters who want to start planning their trip...

Thanks! As navigational aides we used Andrew Wilkes "Arctic and Northern Waters", the official Greenlandic, Canadian and Alaska sailing directions, Ice Charts for Greenland, Canada and Alaska, notes by other sailers and printed detailed charts of the Arctic Archipelago, i.e. the central part of the NWP. Plus Navionics and C-Maps and Sattelite images.

Nice to see Juho Karhu in one of your videos. I was wondering if you were in contact with him and his Alluring Arctic Sailing team as he was going west to east in his Garcia Nouanni. Did you and he cross paths?

@@our_tern It would be fun to take a lifting keel such as your Voyager into Bowmore Harbour. It's pretty shallow, and last time I was there there were not any sailboats. But that's why you have a lifting keel, right?!?

@@SuperSventizeMe That would be great fun - it is on our list of places to visit - when the boat is back in Europe... (A technical comment, we have a centerboard, not a lifting keel. That might be part of a technical video one day...)

So the GX45 is basically just short enough (64.96') to clear the Intracoastal Waterway height limit (65') at high tide? Any nail-biter moments on the way north?

Unfortunately, the GX 45 is a bit too high, about 67 feet. So we did not take the ICW, but just entered the inlets as far as there are bascule bridges.

Regrettably, I discovered the cruising lifestyle too late in life, but I enjoy watching those who are fortunate enough to sail the world. If I could have another chance at life, I would certainly plan to experience it from the Garcia exploration 45. It seems like an amazing boat.

Question: i read somewhere that the Exploration 45 doesn’t heave to very well in bad weather. Have you ever tried it?

I have tried it in moderate weather and it worked well. Never heaved to in a storm so far.

how is it in hot weather? does insulation do a good job keeping the heat out?

Yes, the insulation works very well in hot climates as well. The way the windows in the salon are vertical / tilted inward and have a little roof overhang is helping to reduce heating up with the midday sun.

How do you find your garcia in terms of motion at sea?

Our GX 45 is handling waves of different sizes and shapes very well. In 17'000 NM with wind up to 50 kN we never had a wave in the cockpit. She is very safe. Before the GX 45, we used to charter, where you get production boats which are mostly ok for coastal sailing, but not suitable for offshore sailing in my opinion. I have not sailed in heavy conditions in another proper cruising sailboat, so I can not compare motion in real offshore-situations with other cruising sailboats.

If I had your boat I would set it up the same way right down to not getting a washer dryer combo. Awesome boat, awesome tour. The only thing you could do differently to make it perfect is a hardtop with a couple more solar panels. It would be a huge time and money investment and I would be hard pressed finding enough of both those things right now. Kids and job and what not but that boat is definitely my 10 year plan

Thank you! The solar panels we wave work very well. They provide about 1300 Watt. But more is always better :-)

Great stuff! Would love to see more. You should seriously consider expanding your videos! Question: how do you find the interior of the garcia under way? is she fairly quiet, loud and squeaky, or somewhere in between? The expo 45 is on my shortlist for my next boat, looks amazing!

Thanks! The format so far works well for us, since it is manageable while we are sailing. However, we will do specials on certain subjects which will be longer, such as the Boat Tour. Re: GE 45: For us the perfect boat. She is very well insulated, also for sound. And no squaking. And easy to sail for two persons.

As a much younger man living on Key Biscayne just prior to a hurricanes arrival while walking the beach I witnessed a man who purposely beached his small sailboat. He said the seas and the wind had gotten stronger than his ability to put into a safe harbor .Up the beach was a concrete wall and the man ran his anchor up and over that wall in hopes it would steady the boats position. I came back four days later after the hurricanes departure to find bits, very small ones, of his boat strewn around the area.

Mmhh ... Usually if a storm is approaching, you want to be either in a safe harbour / anchorage or out at sea. Near shore is dangerous.
