New age singers don't hold a candle to this great singer. Most are besure, some dont have a good voice, and after hours of struggle cannot expound raga like great singers who used to do it in a single alap.

I was wondering if you could recommend any good books on different gharanas or on Hindustani music theory, in English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali or Oriya?

Give me just some time, i'll try my best to share links to some good books on Hindustani music theory.

@@panditkansen, thank you very much, and please take your time! I already have V N Bhatkhande's "Hindushthani Sangeet Paddhati" in my list, and it's 5 volumes, which will probably take me a year to read, but any other suggestions are very welcome!

and maybe another request, do you happen to know anything about the influence of Hindustani music in particular upon Western music? I am trying to do a bit of research on the subject - it is relatively well-known that some people from Kirana gharana, for instance, went to the West in 60s for whatever reasons, had some students there, and some of these students later on created new age music, western minimalism, some jazz music, ambient music etc., but I am in particular interested in pre-60s influences (since before 60s it was much harder to make a lot of money on the music, so it was mainly about cultural exchange).

@@panditkansen hey, just a reminder! if you have something to recommend, especially in Marathi or Hindi, then I would be very grateful. I have tried to find something in Hindi on my own but failed - it is such a complex matter, the Hindustani music, that I feel lost in most of the books. and the English ones are just too simple and probably also misrepresent the facts.

@null-992 Apologies for the late response, got stuck with the everyday :) by the way if you are looking for a formal introduction to raags I would highly recommend going through Raag Bodh series by Pandit B R Devdhar. These books acts as course work for Gandharva Mahavidyalay and are easily available in both Marathi and Hindi. You can find them in Marathi and Hindi book stores. And also on Flipkar or Amazon. Raag Bodh - Bhag 1 -- Prarambhik / Praveshika Pratham Raag Bodh - Bhag 2 -- Praveshika Purna Raag Bodh - Bhag 3 -- Madhyama Pratham Raag Bodh - Bhag 4 -- Madhyama Purna Raag Bodh - Bhag 5 -- Visharad Pratham Raag Bodh - Bhag 6 -- Visharad Purna Hindustani Sangeet Paddhati Kramik Pustak Malika Bhag 1 to 6 -- by Pt Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande Raag Parichay Bhag 1 to 4 --- by Pt. Sathish Chandra Shrivastava These books can also be easily found in book stores and e-coms. If you are looking for some other general reads on Hindustani Classical sangeet. Check these out. 1. Chasing the Raag Dream: A look into the world of Hindustani Classical Music -- Aneesh Pradhan 2. Nuance of Hindustani Classical Music -- Hema Hirlekar 3. An Introduction to Hindustani Classical Music: A guidebook for beginners -- Vijay Prakash Singha 4. Lost world of Hindustani Music -- Kumar Prasad Mukherji 5. The record label states this is a "harmonium solo", but its a bhajan sung by someone. Are there two Balram Singhs or is the label wrong? Wonderful recording, nevertheless
