I feel like my input EC is lower than it could be given my environmental conditions, but my runoff EC is very high. Is that because I'm just doing P1 & P3? I'm getting at least 20% runoff 95% of the time when I'm watering, but my understanding of dry backs was wrong, so once a week I just didn't water them, thinking that it was like drought stress, but I think maybe not feeding them that one time per week might be increasing my medium's EC. This was a really great introductory video on crop steering. Thank you!!!!!

This was the info I needed. This really important for weeks 4 and 5 of flowering I found they really need to be doing full dry back by then. I reduced pot size slightly for my setup give me the dry backs I needed.

Thank you very much for explanation. What does dry back 2-4% mean exactly? 2-4% of what?
@jaradratcliff8652
@jaradratcliff8652 8 ай бұрын
2-4% of the water volume content during the "dry back' of the substrate. This is best displayed using substrate sensors that deliver the info in a graph form on a phone/tablet/monitor.

What is your shot size? We use the Floraflex micro drip with 4” rockwool stacked on a 1 gallon coco bag. How big should that p1 event be?

Shot size for Vegetative 1-3% and Generative 4-6%. The dry-back between shots for P1 in Vegetative 1% and Generative 2-3%. In P2 Vegetative 1-3% and Generative 3-6% .

How do you calculate substrate E.C if you dont water enough to produce runoff ?
@philsmith6784
@philsmith6784 2 жыл бұрын
Soil sensor or a bit runoff just to measure. Runoff is not a problem. The main goal is target the dry-back.

Bruh, definitely the best explanation I found on this. Appreciate it!! Could we get a more in depth vid on what exactly is going on in each phase like how to figure out how much per shot??
@kurt5490

Rule of thumb from rockwool is each irrigation volume, called a "shot", is 3% of substrate volume for vegetative & 6% for generative. For flowering, called "generative" double the time between shots and start the irrigation cycle 2-3 hours after lights on and stop 2-3 hours before lights off to promote greater dry back and drive EC up.

@@kurt5490 thanks for the info brother. what’s the best way to get the substrate volume? With a brand new cube should I just measure how much water(ml) it can hold or should I soak it first then let it dry due to salt channels before I measure to full to saturation?
@kurt5490
@kurt5490 2 жыл бұрын
@@Htown_Rocket90 For rockwool you're using the entire volume of the cube to determine shot size. Ramsey suggests using field capacity as a starting point for all other media. A pdf that really helped me is found at www.netafimusa.com. Use their search for Precision Rockwool Applications.pdf. On the pdf's 2nd page. There is a list of most of grodan's rockwool sizes and lists their 3% shot volume in milliliters. There are also 3 short paragraphs that give general guidelines for using rockwool. They contradict some of Ramseys points he makes in other videos. Ramsey uses math to determine shot size to achieve a certain level of saturation during lights on. But increasing shot size during vegetative growth may nullify any crop steering thru precision irrigation. Increase the # of shots , not shot size. Increased shot size is for generative growth. Until proven by experience, I'll use the pdf instead of Ramsey's suggestions. Perhaps I didn't hear him say one or the other. He's a smarter, more experienced man than I am, but I'll reserve final judgment for myself. I hope this helps and answers your questions. Kurt

In a previous video, you talked about shot size( maintenance shots) for a two gallon coco medium. I'm trying to get an idea of shot size for 6x6 Hugo blocks. Any info would help. Thanks for such informative videos!
@benn1555
@benn1555 2 жыл бұрын
The recommended shot size for Hugo blocks is 3% of its volume = 100 ml / shot. In case you want to lower the EC quickly you should raise the volume to 200 ml per shot.
@tee228
@tee228 2 жыл бұрын
@@benn1555 100 ml.. is that right? if my math is right then that would take about 33 irrigation to get to saturation point and i dont think anybody is feeding 33 times lol
@benn1555
@benn1555 2 жыл бұрын
@@tee228 The Hugo block is 3.2L (100% water content) 15cmx15cmx14.2 (6x6inch). When you initially saturate the block by submerging it has to weight around 2.7-2.8 kg which is around 80% of full capacity water content (80% of 3.2L). during cultivation you work between minimum water content 40% maximum 65-70%. Example in the morning water content 50% equal to 1.6kg (theory) in reality is 50%of 80% 1.4 kg, but Grodan make calculation based on 100%. so 50% WC equal 1.6L you want to increase to maximum capacity 70% (it will drain at this level or even before) than need to add 20% to reach this level . 20% of 3.2 L is 640 ml, so in order to get drain you need to give either 3 irrigation x 200 ml or 6 irrigation of 100 ml. Same result. Once again to reach drain level (no saturation), you need 3-6 irrigation in general. Hope is clear.
