Andrew Shackleton does what nobody else on KZbin DIY video does -- that I have seen -- with regard to plaster ceiling repair: he shows you a tough job. I noticed that the other DIY videos all have plaster "bubbles" or sections of ceiling that bowed out and need to be pried away and repaired/filled in with drywall. The repair is relatively easy. There are not three coats of plaster and related products. There is one coat of "mud." He also follows up with all of the comments made here. Nice work from Andrew.

Thank you for the information! I have a similar repair. If the sides of the lathe are clear of plaster, do you recommend removing the insulation and pieces of plaster from the attic that are stuck above the lathe?

You shouldn't need to unless there are huge runs of plaster stuck in the gaps. Jsyn, the first coat had horse hair mixed in when being used with wood lath. You'll probably have a lot of waste with the mix I'm using. Not an issue, just something I'm pointing out.

Your pump may have one or two depending on design/brand. The lower one sets when the pump comes on, meaning how deep the water is in your sump pit. The upper rubber (if yours has one) controls when the pump shuts off.

FINALLY a person with a Pedestal Sump Pump!! I just had to replace mine and bought a Barracuda. I, for the life of me, could not figure out why it was not coming on when it should. I replaced it myself, which it is something I always do. I put it together with all the parts provided. In addition, I bought the discharge valve and piping. I have searched online for the past 4 days trying to find out why it wasn't working. I could only find one other pedestal youtube video, but it did not help. AND THEN YOU!! Come to find out, mine did NOT come with the second rubber piece. I hadn't recycled my old pump yet and took it off/then installed it on the new one. I works perfect now! I am VERY thankful you took the time to make this video. I would have hated to go into the basement/cellar when it rained, just to manually push up the on/off switch! (insert my huge grin here!!) Replace every 5 years? Mine has been installed for at least 18 years and sounds better than the one you're using for the demo. Runs every 10 minutes when there's a couple days of heavy rain(I point a fan at it in that situation) the only annoyance is the float shaft vibrates during operation

I've got a lot of comments about this over the years and I do admit I was being overly cautious. My actual pump, not the one in the video is a good 10 years old and works fine. But, having said that, I had a client with $20k in water damage because his pump died. Another still had the original pump that came with the house. The springs on the activation switch were completely rusted away. Operating conditions such as humidity and the quality of the pump have to be factored in.

Those plastic pedestal pumps are junk. Cast iron or stainless steel is the only way to go. Submersible pumps only pump out 4" of water, those suck too. Water always seeps into the motors and switches.

I've been through 8 of these pumps in 10 years. Plastic, brass, or stainless steel seems to make little difference, it's the cheap-ass micro switch or the open-winding motors that will fail. These pumps are made to last the warranty period and then quickly fail.

The big corporate companies are going to hate me after I make this comment but who cares, Never use durabond for interior walls that stuff doesn’t sand when dry and it cracks leaving hair lines on the outside edge when the house moves because it’s cementious and cement doesn’t contract and expand, if you use it at least use it for the correct application, if your making house repairs use plaster of Paris it has lime in it that withstands moisture and repairs itself when wet it sands unlike durabond but is harder than joint compound, if your using joint compound around showers or sinks don’t do it because the compound will bubble and blister it’s water soluble meaning anything that it comes in contact with that is wet or moist can dissolve it, plaster of Paris on the other hand is your best friend when it comes to interior repairs it’s the reason all the tall cathedrals in Europe are still standing after hundreds of years of weather changes.
@AndrewShackleton
@AndrewShackleton 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Santiago, Durabond is not cement, it's mostly Plaster of Paris with a retardant so it sets up slower. You're a bit off about the nature of Plaster of Paris. It contains no lime. It's made of gypsum, the mineral Calcium Sulphate. Lime is Calcium Hydroxide and water. This information is very easy to look up on the internet. If you are making interior plaster you will often mix lime putty and Plaster of Paris for damp areas such as kitchens and baths. I have used lime putty and Plaster of Paris to make interior plaster and it didn't set up well because I don't know what retardants professionals were using. Durabond gets around that problem nicely. Regular Plaster of Paris without a retardant sets up way too quick aside from very small jobs.
@insantiago798
@insantiago798 2 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewShackleton your confused plaster of Paris already comes with lime in it hence the reason it can suck up moisture and fix itself and is a retardant do your research before commenting I’ve worked with plaster of Paris for 25 years and have done months of research stop misleading trolling people

How do you adjust the float when it didn’t rise
@AndrewShackleton
@AndrewShackleton 2 жыл бұрын
The float should always rise. 3 things can stop it. 1, the shaft it's connected to is stuck on something, 2, the adjusting washers for height are in the wrong place, 3, the float has a hole in it and is full of water (very unlikely). Hope this helps!

I see the panel has colors for cirucit breakers black, green , blue . I suspect the Bue which is the most common in the panel is a 15 amp breaker I understand new wires are on it. Yet the panel has some old home wires like the armored cable wire. Yet, if they are old wires are they rated for 15 amps as wires ? Correct me if i Am wrong . But, I thought old wires were never as high as 15 amp wires. I thought old wires are thinner 16 gauge wires , or less , and not thicker 14 gauge wires; and as such would be on 10 amp breakers or 7 amp breakers only. Question: can old wires be placed on 15 amp breakers - or should one be concerned whenever an old home has an old wire on a 15 amp breaker - that the breaker size although common for new wires likely did not ever exist in old days for old wires ? Question: What breaker size are, the old wires on amperage wise ? Is it correct size for old wires to be on ? What size breaker is the old armor clad wires on ?
@AndrewShackleton
@AndrewShackleton 2 жыл бұрын
The original 2 panels were fused and the lowest rated fuses were 15. I have no idea when that work was done but I'd guess in the 50s or 60s. All of the lightest gauge wires are the same size from what I can see regardless of age. This panel was installed by professionals around 2012 after the local utility provider noticed our mast being too close to the gas meter. They spotted it after my neighbour's lines were taken out by a tree. It was expensive to move it after 50 years of it being perfectly fine where it was. I decided to upgrade the panel at the same time.

The federal government has no jurisdiction over real property owned by Canadians other than to tax those assets. To suggest that the federal government has the legal authority to ban foreigners from buying a residential property in Canada is political nonsense. Under the Constitution Act, 1867, property and civil rights fall within the jurisdiction of the provinces. Where are journalists who studied law? Journalists are merely publishing this news without considering whether what the federal government is proposing is even legal. Property and civil rights are the constitutional jurisdiction assigned exclusively to the provincial legislatures by section 92(13) of the Constitution Act, 1867.
@AndrewShackleton

Great comment Sven. From what I've read they are planning on implementing their housing strategy in concert with the provinces, no doubt for the exact reasons you've stated. But I'm not sure why you're questioning journalists' role in this. They report the news. Here's the press release from the Liberal party liberal.ca/housing/curb-unproductive-foreign-ownership/

@@AndrewShackletonBecause journalists need to reflect and analyze what the information actual means instead of merely regurgitating government press releases. @@svenwalker5955 I do have to agree wit you on this point. I think the foreign buyers ban is somewhat misdirected and is easy low hanging fruit politically. Whether it actually comes into play is a question (as you've said) although I do think it will have a psychological impact on the market. I believe that the fundamental reason we've seen the gains we have in prices is artificially low rates, and not foreign buyers. This has certainly been the case since 2009 where the overnight rate has been 1% or lower for 10 years out of 13.
@svenwalker5955

@@AndrewShackleton Yes, smoke and mirrors. Average household debt has never been higher in Canadian history. Instead of moving forward with increasing interests rates, the government is scared to bankrupt the electorate by causing the Bank of Canada to raise interest rates too quickly. The record housing prices have been fuelled by record low interest rates. With 6 to 8 interest rate increases projected within the next 12 to 16 months, some homeowners better hold on tight and tighten their belts.

Thank you for the unbiased and comprehensive explanation of the run away housing market. Most (if not all) involved in real estate are blaming supply, and only supply.
