I've always been on the lookout for Document/Archival quality inks as I journal and wouldn't want my writing to disappear. However, for the longest time all I would see is tons of inks with zero waterproofness. And the only Document inks being Blue, Black, and Red. I'm thrilled more companies are bringing back steadfast inks, and that more fountain pen people are seeing their benefit! I was interested in a few of these already and so glad to see them in action here, pictures just don't always offer the best information. Thank you!

I’m happy to help! Thats the reason why i made this video. I too was looking for more info about the waterproofness of these "permanent inks" and I don't find too many informative videos about it. I need to make my part 2 of waterproof inks soon! i appreciate your comment. Please feel free to checkout my other videos.

Is it Fine nib? I'm very much surprise to see line variation from Sailor. I have Medium-Fine and it's super-stiff, no line variation at all. The only Sailor pen from mine which can do very little line variation is Pro Gear Standard M-F. It has bigger nib and it is slightly softer than small nibs in "slim" versions. I hard Sailor KOP pens have softest and more bouncy nibs but didnt try it.
@tintanna47932 ай бұрын
It’s MF. I didn’t notice the fine line variation until somebody pointed it out. I guess it’s just habit that I tend to put a little more pressure on my down strokes. MF is hard and stiff. But mine is an old sailor pro gear slim. It has the old Sailor logo. I don’t know if newer nibs are harder or softer.
@awaken772 ай бұрын
FPR flex nibs are very capable and can make even ugly handwriting look "beautiful" (sort of). I have Ultraflex (which is even more softer). But the downside is Himalaya pen for me is very unreliable and temperamental - sometimes it leaks, sometimes it has hard starts, or burps blobs of ink, ruining the page. Not even close to Japanese "big three" in quality (Pilot-Sailor-Platinum). im disappointed . I'm keeping this pen only for the nib itself
@tintanna47932 ай бұрын
I agree FPR pens can be a little temperamental. Sometimes you get lucky sometimes you don’t. I got a good pen from them and it works for me. I am happy with it. I think the issue is more of quality control. The first one I got had an issue and I contacted customer service and got a replacement. The replacement was awesome!

5:41 very beautiful writing. How did you achieve such variation with Sailor Pro Gear slim? I have few Sailors but they all have stiff nibs, no line variation
@tintanna47932 ай бұрын
Good question! I just discovered that by accident. I just happen to apply a little pressure on my down strokes. I was pleasantly surprised!

I have the Korean version and I bought it from ebay. I love the way it writes. It's like unleashing a sword. I had some questions about cleaning and you demonstrated how to take the ink bladder out. That was exactly what I needed. This made me want the Japan version. Thanks for the great review.
@tintanna47933 ай бұрын
Unleashing a sword. I like that description! Hehe. Yeah more like it. You can always flush the pen using a bulb syringe that’s how I would do it or if you have the converter you can flush it that way too by submerging it in clean water repeat several times until the water becomes clear. I have no trouble maintaining a Pilot pen. That’s one of the things I like about Pilot pens. They are so easy to maintain. I appreciate your feedback. Thanks for commenting! :) if you like the steel nib, you will definitely like the gold nib. :)
@Frasse-g4f3 ай бұрын
I think the hard starts may be due to babys bottom on the nib. Mine drove me crazy, until I said "what the heck", and reground it myself. Now it writes perfectly with no hard starts. The rail-roading may be due to the feed, but I don't think it's designed for such writing. I put a replacement ebonite feed in mine, but I don't know if it made it any better. The hard starts remained until I reground the nib. It's border line impractical with the ebonite feed as it's such a wet writer with it.
@tintanna47933 ай бұрын
The hard starts remain even after modifying the feed? That sucks. I don’t have the patience dealing with that. It is unfortunate because apart from that I really really like the flex of this pen.

@tintanna47933 ай бұрын
If you put it that way, yes, they all write and work the same. What I mean by beginner is how much you know the pen, filling it, maintaining it, cleaning it. You know nerdy fountain pen stuff! Hehe but the more you try different nibs, brands, the more you want to upgrade and try a more expensive brand and you can easily fall into that rabbit hole. Hehe . Oh by the way I appreciate your comment.

Thank you for this video. I have had a Lamy Al-star for about 6 yrs and all of a sudden it is giving me a fit writing. I have cleaned it numerous times, soaked it overnight, switched inks, nibs. etc to no avail. It writes about a paragraph and then goes dry. Would anyone have any thoughts as to why this might be happening? I thought it was the ink that might be dried out, but if the pen writes a paragraph fine, not sure it is the ink. Thank you!
@tintanna47936 ай бұрын
You’re absolutely welcome!! I want to like my Lamy, but other Japanese pens I have just perform far more superior. I tried giving it a chance but I just don’t find myself reaching for it. Try flushing it using a bulb syringe and see if it makes a difference. May be a pen flush will also help. Yeah. I feel your pain. Lamy is meh for me.

I'm Japanese. I like pilot pens. English is written in translation. The handling of your pen looked rough. You put too much effort into it. FA Nib is a very delicate part. Maybe it's broken. I think it's good to consult with the pilot's support and send it out for repair. Thank you.

Thanks for your review. I saw many JH82 pen reviews but because they used different inks I didn't know there would be color variations until I got mine. I noticed the black ink I always use (waterman) looks very different on the Pilot VP and on the JH82, even though they're both F and the flows are very similar. The JH82 shows a purple undertone and the Pilot is more saturated and I can't see any purple undertones with it. I did some research but couldn't find an explanation. Perhaps it's the golden coat JH82 used on their nibs causing some sort of reaction with the inks, I don't know. I love how they write (not too smooth, not too sharp), but the variation on my black ink is something I don't like. I like black inks to look black, not greyish purple. I even did the test with a Kaweco and the only one showing the color variation is the JH82, it's intriguing.
@tintanna47938 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching my video. Yeah. I don’t know either. I just noticed that my Jinhao pens write paler than other pens. I don’t know what it is about the nib that makes the pen do that. I am also intrigued by it so hopefully there’s someone who can explain better as to why.

I have both an Al Star and a Metropolitan; both in medium nib. I’m personally a huge Pilot fan, but the Al Star is definitely more comfortable for me to write with. Comfort aside, I prefer the Metropolitan in fit and finish, and ink flow. I tried the Al Star in a fine nib, and I did not like how scratchy it was. Pilot fine nibs are definitely better ground than Lamy nibs from my experience. I did buy my Al Star for much less than retail, but value is definitely on the Metropolitan’s side. If I could go back in time, I would probably choose a Pilot Prera as my first good fountain pen instead, because of the more comfortable grip. For reference, I use Lamy turquoise ink in my Al Star.

Are italic and stub nibs the same?
@tintanna47938 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for watching. They have similarities and differences. Both can achieve line variations depending on the angle you hold the pen. Stub nibs have more rounded corners whereas italic nibs don’t. Italics create a sharper line edge compared to the stub. Both are nice though and perfect for showcasing shimmer, sheen or chromashading inks.
