If you listen to more than one of his videos he constantly says no two properties are the same and what works on one doesn't always work on another. The biggest one I hear criticized is the doe factory. When I bought my 60 acre property I would see up to 40 does a night between my son and I. Rarely saw a mature buck until rut. I used his advise and now I see them regularly in the daylight. His free advice changed the hunting on my place in MI. He tells many stories of thing he did wrong as a rookie especially in his books. He's trying to help people get past the rookie stage more quickly. Unlike many of the real sales people he rarely sells things. No $15000 planters like Woods. His food plot videos recommend a 4 wheeler, sprayer, hand seeder and a roller. That is not out of reach for most. I don't agree with some things he says but I can learn a lot more from him than this vid.
@kevinv2062 күн бұрын
If you watch enough of his videos you will hear him say that his videos are not for the hunter you describe but for hunters who want to kill mature deer (5+ years old). He produces them on his property and kills them regularly. 5 and 6 year old deer do not behave the same as 3 and 4 year old deer. Your not really in disagreement with him because you dont share his objective. He actually agrees with you. If you want to be a meat hunter and have fun and maybe get lucky then thats what you should do. There is nothing wrong with that. He found a way to make a living doing what he loves and helping others. More power to him.

Sturgis is a marketing master and an average deer hunter. Disagree? lets see the bucks he has shot in the last 5-10 years and compare those to what numerous other hunters have killed during that same period. Average hunter with world-class marketing skills. Sorry folks but that just the brutal truth. Now in regards to the issues being discussed in this video, I would give Sturgis the nod on accuracy of the information provided compared to the guy in this video, although both make some valid points. I'm certainly not against giving credit to anyone, where and when it is due.

I’d like to see him try to hunt the steep mountain terrain here in WV where it’s tens of thousands of acres of nothing but woods. He would be totally lost!!

Well I've picked up things from John Eberhard and Jeff Sturgis and combined them with my own hunting techniques and I've improved my hunting success considerably,as far as this young man's opinion is concerned he has every right to express his opinion.we all have that right.just my opinion, nothing personal.

I can’t say I agree with you on all points, but I 100% agrre with the spirit of you message. Rookies need to get out there and have their own experiences, try new things even if it goes against the nomenclature of the industry and have fun. The last point about having fun is the most important. You’ll never see me sit all day at a spot. That sucks! Countless times, I’ve left my spot and have capitalized on it. I’ll sometimes just go mushroom hunting if I get bored or put on a judo point and squirrel hunt for awhile. My latest adventure is to go in the woods with just my bow and knife, no backpack, no stands and see what I can kill. I call it “hunt like an Indian.” It’s some of the most fun I’ve had being in the woods. Anyway, I enjoyed your video and great message to rookie hunters.

the theory of what youre saying relies on disciplined hunters which is a delusion, you have to do something, some restriction to keep people from shooting EVERYTHING. I hunt public exclusively in eastern VA and without APR there arent deer at all...period, they kill everything. people will shoot a spike every year if thats all there is, i see it first hand

I wish I could upload a video to prove your first point. I have been using rope scrapes for about 6 years. My buck and does love them. (Jeff S says they don't work) and I have some videos taken within a couple feet of the scrap with the buck's head the only thing in frame. I have multiple videos of does biting the end of the rope and playing at pulling on the rope to make the limb bounce. I get some sent on cameras and they will sometimes give the camera a sniff and act concerned but all bucks come back to the scrape. And that includes 4.5 year old bucks, some of them have been in the 160inch range. I may have to hang 5 ropes to get one to get real use, and of those that work only one in 5 of those will become a good year round "licking branch" but I can pull photos of bucks and does in July hitting the rope and putting sent on it.

I'm an inexperienced hunter who sees on average less than 5 deer per year. I take what I see and I typically won't hunt in the few places with antler restrictions. It took me 3 years to get my first deer and if we impose antler point restrictions or ban doe hunting I would get 0 deer in my first few years learning to hunt. This discourages new hunters and acts to gate keep the sport. I'm just now starting to get selective with what deer I take and a law requiring said selection would have just prevented me from hunting at all

The details Jeff emphasizes and you say to ignore is the biggest difference between what he kills and what you kill. Don’t get me wrong (and I’m not a fan of him) but I’ve done this for 40 years and have to agree with him over you. If the small details even make a difference once out of every 50 times out, I’m guessing that’s 25 more mature bucks over a lifetime of hunting. You choose
@RushOutdoors23 күн бұрын
Interesting video! The one thing that I will say is that your statement on bucks and movement is incomplete due to you yourself stated the odds increase and decrease based on many factors those factors are what makes you odds better or worse for success, and you if you have done this for a awhile you will understand that sometimes less is more. Meaning somedays are higher in odds than others. Especially if you have small parcels. Knowing this educating deer with by letting them know you are hunting them is a issue if you think differently your in trouble. Your contradictions on others experiences is interesting for being so young and a rookie as you stated. But a very good points in many places of your video just remember deer are animals of habit. They do not have critical thinking like a human that maybe the only thing that Jeff over thinks in my opinion. Humans have critical thinking that is one of the things that puts us on the top of the food chain. We do not have the survival thinking of deer! We prove that everyday! Good video! The rookie opinion matters also! Also what Jeff is saying don't make these mistakes rookies make. Rookies get lucky but experience will be successful almost every year! That is a fact!
@makeyourownluck582224 күн бұрын
Say what you want about Jeff. Everyone can have an opinion but I feel like you are creating this video just for money. How many times did you say how smart he is!?!? He is on a level of knowledge that is hard to see for most people! And that's ok. But if you have hunted long enough ( 40 years ) like I have all of sudden after watching his videos and being at his farm for his charity event the last 4 years you realize that he has helped you put the BIG picture together! If you don't understand what he's saying it's ok. You will in time!

Jeff has some good advice. But take half of it with a grain of salt. Deer do get conditioned to a point to where they don’t blow out of areas over time with different pressures applied. Never had deer run from a camera placed on a decent tree, even at a normal height, etc. However, he is correct about hunting good weather days, paying attention to the wind, and that typically the older bucks behave much differently than the other deer. End of the day, you still have to hunt them to harvest them.

The dumbest little knowledge bomb Jeff talks about is summer are plots are just doe factories...😂
@passingiton13404 сағат бұрын
Sorry, I own a doe factory. I'm not saying everyone has this problem, but if you owned one what he says is accurate. Took me 3 years to change my property from doe invested and only seeing mature bucks in the rut if you were lucky, to having them on my 60 acres all the time.

Here’s the problem. They aren’t necessarily “mistakes”. You’ll still kill deer every now and then. But you will NOT consistently kill giant mature whitetails every year by making these “mistakes” he speaks of. Thats what he’s getting at. He’s making videos for the hardcore. His stuff isn’t geared toward the weekend warrior or guys that don’t really grasp how to hunt big deer, like the guy in this video. He’s an average joe with decent tips but your not going to kill booners watching these videos lol

it makes sense why your first sit is typically your best when you explain your hunting habits. each and every sit diminishes the next one and i think you inadvertently contradicted yourself, if you only have one property to hunt you can’t afford to only have one good sit for the season.
@vervi1jw1Ай бұрын
If you are going for a mature buck, you need to do so many things right and still get lucky. If you sit with bad wind, you will likely never even know a mature buck winded you. He's gone and probably now nocturnal.

We are in our 6th season of leasing land in Southwest Wisconsin. I found Jeffs videos on KZbin 4 years ago. In the spring of 2023 we decided to set our property (110 acers) up using what i have learned from his books, wed classes, and videos. The fall of 2023 we harvested three, four year old+ bucks in two days. Two on October 29th and One on October 30th. Our best year ever. Ths year(2024) I have already punched my tag with a beautiful four year old 8 pointer taking advantage of a cold front on October 23rd. A strategy i learned watching Jeffs videos. Say what you will about Jeff Sturgis but results are results.

difference between your book and Jeff's is... Jeff is talking about hunting MATURE DEER!!
@fixtritephil7712Ай бұрын
i I've known Jeff for many years and he was a rookie just like all beginners are.He learned about hunting all on his own. He and his Brother hunted the same public land that i did.Jeff is concerned with mature White Tails and what you may find may differ with what Jeff believes from his experiences.Jeff gives free advise in over 400 you-tube videos that has helped many rookies tag their first buck and many of his followers will attest to his knowledge when it concerns all things White Tail especially Habitat.. The deer on your trail cam shots are not Mature as in 6 yr olds or more and younger Deer make mistakes that end their lives and wind up in the back of a pickup. If you have seen his trophy room that alone is testimony to his knowledge of what works for him and those who value his methods for success,little to argue about there. There is nothing wrong with you and disagreement is ok, but when you can put out videos with the content much like Jeff does you may pick up more subscribers. And remember Jeff has far more years of learning what works vs what doesnt than you do. Don't take anything for granted when hunting for mature white tail Bucks, What you believe about his hunting methods and ways he gets intel on deer obviously works and is directly tied to his sucess. Hunt safe,hunt smart and good luck!

I got turned off with arrogance. It’s this way, I’m right, I know it. Any other way is wrong jargon. I’ve hunted since the 80s. I commented a few times and seen what he’s about quickly. He needs humility to be even close to-on the same level as Winke and Woods.

I think you are missing the boat... Lol He is trying to help you tag big bucks. #1 Keep intrusion to a minimum (now in a park or farm might not matter as much) Don't have dirt bikes or chain saws in the real woods. #2 Keep noise to a minimum (park or farm might not matter as much) #3 you stink play the wind; you will do better period. Your wall is a little week to be giving anyone advise!! #5 Doe pee (plain and simple snake oil) Wise old bucks know better. #5 winds change, thermals change make necessary moves. I think you missed his points. lol look at his results and then look at yours. If your happy with young deer, throw caution to the wind. If you want to take a jump listen to somebody like Jeff

My boy you are wish beyond your age! I have 50 years in this game of deer hunting, Every piece of property is different. We have bedding areas east and west of us and our piece is mostly hay fields. It requires a totally different approach than the way even the neighbors can hunt. The bottom line is get out there an hunt. Sure you will make some mistakes,this is how you learn. New hunters need to keep in mind that we didn't always have all this stuff and most deer were shot by someone sitting on a log on stump, wearing red plaid, blue jeans, and most likely smoking!

I tend to disagree a lot with Jeff’s stuff. I’ve bought two of his books, and they’re loaded with good and interesting info. Some of his stuff is so over the top, and much of it is based on assumptions that often differ with studies, and anecdotal observations. My biggest pet peeve is when he says “kill them from the couch” like you say here, most people can’t pick the best days during the season, and need to go when they can. You need to be mindful of “scent sound and sight” but there’s no way you can eliminate all of that. Hunt the days you have with the conditions and property you have.
