This professor is a very keen observer of China who has developed a much better insight into China than any of the Western Consultant and those well established think-tank experts that I have come across. China is obviously drawing upon its thousands of years of wisdom, blender it with the last 500+ years of Western success and develop a even better one to challenge and counter the dominance and hegemony of the West especially the US in all aspects. The economy is only a partial reflection of the success behind the rise of China which he either had failed to see or has no time to talk about. Just remember that for the past 2000 years China world GDP share were over 50% a and prior to 1850, China still has one third of the world GDP. How did it deteriorated so badly to just 2% over the last 100 years? The forces of the cycle of history and the rise and fall of empires (hegemons) if presented and discussed here will make it truly complete and fascinating.

The reason why they had Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao is because they both were not a threat to Jiang Zhemin. Also, Bo Xilai is Jiang's subordinate as well so Jiang is also part of the reason for corruption problem on official level. Xi is tackling Jiang at the moment by first taking away his subordinates, such as Bo. Once Jiang is cleared away by Xi, we can expect better and more competent leaders in the future. Xi will be remembered as a legend who made things right again.

Fantastic job, Doug. I have been seeking for something like this for 20+ hours when building my online AP Chinese course. I am glad that I found you. You do have a deep understanding of the authentic culture hidden from the surface which I haven't seen from many educators. Truth have different versions, but you are trying to state the facts. I worship your professionalism.

China is hiding it,s massive debt ,for example just one of the hundreds cities that been built has a debt of $50 billion and this is only what is admitted to with grey hidden loans the figure is much higher. Multiply this model across China and the figure is possibly over 200%of GDP. The property market has 17% or more of speculative owned empty property, this bubble will burst the cities will run out of borrowed money and a crash will follow and no money to pay debt. Resulting in 10s of millions of unemployed and a suvear hit to the world's economy.

While in the west single and contradictional capitalists interests robbed the states and made economical planning virtually impossible, China finally shows the superiority of communist economic planning. It was an excellent strategy to use the capitalist competition to urge them to use cheap Chinese labor. Any company was urged to do so, otherwise it died in competition. Than they urged them into Chinese joint-ventures, where technology-transfer was required. Low wages were no problem for Chinese workers, since cost of live was extremely lower than in the west. Today virtually anything is or can be produced in China - the west is de-industrialized. Inable for virtually anything - except some car and defense industry. the environmentally issue is regarded more and more and will soon have reached good conditions. In this short time having taken over world production and technology has been an excellent move of the communist party - I hope the capitalists they allow will not dominate the 60 millions of members of the communist party. There is of course a danger and also the west is master in staging fake civil wars - see 08oo.wordpress.com/2012/05/30/key-reasons-and-powers-behind-the-attack-on-syria/

I think a vital factor is missing in this lecture. Something which affects not only commerce but all aspects of life in every nation of the world. Currency. China's main strength is that it issues its own currency to the economy & world while USA is strangled & owned by fed debt. China is in this game for the long haul. Unless USA changes monetary policy they will have a serious problem. USA system is worse. Wealth that flees China will be regenerated because China is building a solid base.

this guy knows lots about China, and I'm Taiwanese/Chinese. However, in military terms, total spending is just a number. China's warships such as Aegis with supersonic missiles that outrange US warships only cost half of the US . Military personnel costs sometimes are not counted in the budget. Look up list of people's liberation army navy warships. On wiki, China has 690 warships. According to Chinese military , they have 1000. US has 283.
