When the "Teddy Bear" song came out in 1972, I was 13 years old and living a miserable life in Goldsboro, NC while my father was stationed in S.E. Asia, for the third time! For some reason, that song just really spoke to me and it gave me some kind of hope for a better future. Eventually, my dad came back stateside and we moved on to N.W. Florida where my life got considerably better. After graduating high school in 1977, I joined the U.S. Coast Guard and in 1985 and in my late 20's, found myself stationed at a Coast Guard air station in Puerto Rico, but my wife and children were still back in the U.S. and I had felt very lonely. Imagine my surprise one day when I found out that Barbara was going to be performing a U.S.O. show at the air station that evening, oh yeah, I made sure that I attended. After the show, I got in line with all of the other Coasties, but unlike them, I didn't ask for an autograph, I simply asked for a hug, instead. Without hesitation, Barbara gave me the biggest hug ever and it had really made my day. Now in my mid-60's, I see that Barbara is still out there performing and blessing people and that really blesses my heart. You go girl! I've told this story to a whole lot of people for almost 40 years now. :)
