My story might be interesting to you. Although I've hiked the Rivas trail in 2022 and 2024, I first started this hike in 1972 and took photos of the four peaks leading to Goat Peak (four peaks starting with the one just northwest of the reservoir). The brush was so short compared to today and there were wide firebreaks leading from the reservoir and along the ridge and across all four peaks all the way to Goat Peak. Almost nobody hiked it back then in 1972 and there was no Rivas trail. I actually got to the top of peak 1 by climbing up from Temescal Canyon, just north of the Camp Store (it existed then) and then northeastward up to Peak 1. In 2024 I was able to make photos from some of the exact same spots as in 1972. The similarities and differences are stunning. So much overgrown brush now where none existed before. I never made it to the top of Goat Peak: in May of 1972 I had planned to come back "in about a week" but for various reasons that never happened and I moved far away. Over the years, the photo I made from Peak 1, showing the ridge line leading to Goat Peak, always haunted me as a personal failure. Then I realized I could go back. Surely it wasn't as steep as it looked back then. Well, in 2022 I realized it was far steeper than I expected and was amazed at how I was able to get to Peak 1 in 1972 just by climbing the hillside. But this time I made it to Peak 3. Even though I'm over 800 miles away, I was planning to go again in 2025 and now there is this horrible fire. I hope the beauty of Temescal Canyon itself survived, but the photos I see on the news show the hills burned bare. I can only wonder when we can hike there again, when we can climb there again. Anyone interested in getting in touch with me about Temescal Canyon and climbing its peaks then and now, please reply here. One last thing - I was happy to hear you pronounce "Temescal" the same way I do (accent on the first syllable) - all these young TV reporters are saying it wrong!

Great information! I really appreciate it when viewers add a historical perspective. Not only the landscape, but the trails have changed over time. I would not have known any of that without your input. If your interested, I also have a video of Upper Topanga State Park which may also cover some areas you previously visited. Great to hear from you!

Thank you for these great videos!. Just wanted to note that Hwy 2 is currently (1/2025) closed between Islip Saddle and Big Pines. You can access this area via the PCT from Islip saddle, but the peaks may be under the Bridge Fire Closure (fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1210687.pdf). The PCT is currently closed between Vincent Gap and Wright Mountain. You might want to confirm with the ANF before heading out there.

I love this peak! These random ones are the best! I did this one twice; the second time back in 4/2022, I also back door climbed Pacifico, and looped back on 3N17! Most of my latest peak, summit, hill climbs near San Diego lately have been unnamed, random ones as well! If you ever make it down here, the Laguna Mountains have TONS of random, unnamed peaks, some on Peakbagger, and some I got only from the topo maps! Sevearl of them only have elevation contours, and the chaparral is thin on many of them, making cross-country mild, or even easy on several!
@MrMtee3327 күн бұрын
I know I originally saw this peak on a Brian Powell video. This one and Few other videos were born out of your experiences. I gladly followed in your footsteps with the knowledge I needed. Hopefully I can do a few of the San Diego ones at some point. Meanwhile, you are doing a good job of knocking off the sites down there!

Awesome hike and video! Tecuya is on my list whenever I can get up that way again! The San Emigdio Mtns. are underrated for great hikes! I once tried getting to nearby Escapula Peak some years ago but missed the faint track to get to it, but ended up on a lesser summit called Tecuya Ridge West (6,740'), and it was before I did videos, unfortunately! I also once did Brush Mtn (7,050') combined with San Emigdio Mtn (7,492'), and that was a fantastic hike as well! The range has great views of Mt. Pinos, Central Valley, and Frazier Mtn!
