@@joshwa1234 for reference the next time you make a Windows 7 VM only three updates are needed to get tools install to work. KB3138612, KB4490628, KB4474419. I would make a small iso file with the 32 and 64 bit versions of these. You should then be able to install the three updates reboot and then VMware Tools will work. Older versions of VMWare tools like 11.0.6 or 10.2.5 work out of the box as they use SHA1 code signing on the drivers. 10.2.5 is the most stable one for Vista and also the final one for XP. But using the version downloaded by VMWare has OS restrictions on the older builds. Finding the original version from release doesn’t have that issue.

When I got back into computers. It was the middle or maybe the end of bad caps. Everybody knows about. The other 2 issues I had was for some reason some motherboards just seemed to be garbage. i saw 2 models of pc-chips motherboards. One lasted forever and the other one died after a few years. Might have been bad caps but if it was. It was not visible. The other thing was stupid little fans on the chip sets or under sized heat sinks. It was like some of the video cards that didn't have fans. They would slow down or lock up. Put a fan on it and problem solved. Same thing for boards that had issues. If you caught it in time. Can't tell you how many work a few more weeks, months, etc and died anyway. Now this does not include the processors running hotter than **** and such.

I own a ShuttleX socket 462. Bought it for the equivalent of 15 pounds 2 years ago. It seems like a neat little computer but I don't like to use it. It runs noisy and hot and working on in inside is a horrible experience- way too cramped. My PSU died too and I replaced it with a FSP flex but it's even noisier. I suspect this PSU is not enough to power socket 462 which need very specific PSUs which make them bad retro machines.

You can run Windows 8.1 or 10 after you install Boot Camp. Those were the OSes available at the time. It seems to have plenty of video power, for sure. You can update the DDR3 ECC to 64 GB but that's overkill LOL As far as Mac OSes, you are likely stuck with OS 10 Yosemite or OS 11 Big Sur, I read that OS X can be downloaded for free.

I'd try a flex ATX supply with at least 300W. Booting a processor needs a lot of power for just a moment, but sometimes a supply doesn't have the amps to do it., especially if its a bit geriatric haha.

While the capacitors on the motherboard are definitely suspect of making an old PC not work, I'm pretty sure they won't cause your power supply to go puff... I'd rather both give up on all the PSUs in these units in bulk and replace them with a modern compatible test unit and replace said capacitors, because the PSU is the most dangerous thing in a PC for all the rest of it's components, especially if it's an old low quality unit.

I pretty much gave up with these old shuttles myself! mainly the same reasons. They also appear to suffer condition wise! no matter how much you clean them they always look a bit rough. If they are treated badly it really shows. They were great little things back in the day though! I still kept my first SN45GV2 I bought new in 2004. It is fully boxed and mint, but the original psu needs a recap and I have not dared to even try and power it.

I have a 2021 Lenovo M90n-1 Nano IoT with a Core i3 and only 4GB of RAM. It runs Windows 11. It can be slow, esp. during updates. It has a secondary 1TB M.2 drive for storage. It's fanless so it makes no sound at all. I back up my media on it via USB. It connects to WiFi but it isn't visible on the network. I had it temporarily as a print server but we don't print enough to have it on all the time. So, it's mostly useless 😁 but it's only 179 x 88 x 34.5 mm (7.05 x 3.46 x 1.36 inches). It uses a portable , fold up LCD 15" monitor.

These PSUs are quite new- the one I replaced in my Athlon XP shuttle had no sata. I replaced it with a modern Flex PSU and it works but the Shuttle is only stable at 1GHz when it should run at 1.8GHz. Socket 462s are notorious for running hot and needing very specific PSUs which make them a pain to use today.

Its interesting how they bothered with that instant on thing. Most Mainboards even then had option "power on after Power loss". Special in Business class like these
@gentuxable
@gentuxable 12 күн бұрын
When ATX replaced AT, this would be the thing some people noticed immediately. Before it was always "Instant-On" because the position of the switch determined what happens. If you had a PC locked away in a cabinet running 24/7 you'd need to nothing with AT to have it start again after a power loss.With ATX by default most PCs stayed off after a power cut. I think it was one of these things that nobody in engineering the ATX standard noticed until users complained.
