The centrifuge force created by the rotation wasn't enough for the propeller to overcome the force of the water flow. The solutions could be either increasing the engine RPM or reduce the props pitch. That simple!
@boatingscandinavia91202 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Increasing the RPM did not make any difference and the pitch is already set by the manufacturer. Sadly not that simple my friend. 🙂 The propeller got fixed after a professional found an imperfection that made it vibrate and then collapse.

I still get some comments and DM's on these FlexoFold video's. I took the propeller to a local workshop who fixes bent propellers and such, they found that there where an imperfection in the propeller that made it vibrate (Weight difference in the blades), and that again made it collapse when it had to rely on the centrifugal force to hold it open in reverse. The issue was fixed and the propeller performed great after that. Although FlexoFold did get back to me, they used all their e-mails and a phone call yelling at me for makin a bad video about their propeller than actually helping me and giving me tips to find the problem. Hope this answers your questions. 🙂

As far as I can understand by the video, your propeller is Right but your engine is actually Left (or the opposite anyway). Nothing to do with the size or the weight of the blade.

I use the Zinc spray! Petit Prop Coat. Two thin layers. I remove it every year with glass beads in a blast cabinet and put another coat on. Its only about $20.00 per can and the can will last two seasons.

Hi I have the same problem with Flexifold 3 blade, has been tested and there is no reason why it won’t open. Have you found a solution?
@moejrbig4 жыл бұрын
Rex, I am surprised you are having a problem. This prop has never failed me. I take it apart yearly, glass bead blast the blades, put Zinc Spray on it and reassemble it. I do use a grease needle to push grease inside the gears so noting will get in there. My E mail is [email protected]

I know this is old video. I was Googling for this prop brand reviews and came here. I just bought my boat with this prop and was curious....Anyway, I have no experience with THIS prop but looking at your other two videos I suspect that your rudder is very close to the propeller to generate the needed water flow for it to stay open. I would love to know if you found a better solution since this video.

Hello Val. There where an imperfection in the propeller that made it vibrate, and that again made so it wouldnt open properly. The issue was fixed and the propeller performed great after that. :-) Good luck with your new boat.

Any one notice the clever edit? Our Vlogger missed putting the circlip on the bearing end of the shaft, it was on the paper at one point & then "hey presto" it wasn't! However this was very useful as I'm doing the same replacement at the moment and needed to confirm a few things (which was how I knew he'd gone wrong!)
@boatingscandinavia91205 жыл бұрын
Good eye! :-) I haven't even noticed that. I actually took it apart again just for that reason, and I have actually managed to edit it a little wrong there indeed. :P I have footage of me taking it back in so... not sure what happened there In the editing. But yes people, remember the circlip. :-D

I have a three blade Flexifold and it has never failed since I bought my 50' Beneteau in 2009. It has always worked flawlessly. I have both called Flexafold and Emailed them for advice on a good coating to reduce barnacles and they have always responded!

In May I purchased a 2-blade flex-o-fold, placed it on the boat, boat was splashed and upon placing boat into reverse to exit the lift slift I could feel an unusual vibration, went into forward and vibration was worse and at 2000 rpm my vision vibrated, that's not exaggerated. Pulled boat 2 more times, one to reseat new prop, the other to put old prop back on. Needless to say I'm very disapointed so far. I emailed them and called to leave a message, hopefully I hear back from them. Too bad too because the boat moved nicely forward and reverse with no reverse prop-walk.

Hi ! Very nice video. What do you think about your Mamba 311 having a spade rudder? Would it be worse for offshore cruising than a skeg rudder? I know this has been discussed quite a lot before, but I'm not sure about what to look for in my future boat.

you are making your life hard - get a weight belt - get neutrally buoyant - get some fins on (civy flippers) you might even try an SSBA - surface supply - our flexofold is nothing short of brilliant - so not sure what has happened in your case
@allproimp7 жыл бұрын
My Flexofold works perfectly, once I learned how to use it. The last propulsion must be forward, over 3 knots to get it to close while sailing. In reverse, there is a click sound, actually locking the blades into place at low speed, then once in reverse, backs beautifully. Almost more reverse thrust than my old fixed blade prop. It is all about allowing the shaft to come to a stop, I think, before going into reverse. Beneteau Oceanis 351.

Did you ever hear back. Currently looking at one of these and want to know wether to steer clear. Thanks for the video
@boatingscandinavia91207 жыл бұрын
Yes, there was an imperfection on the propeller blade. I did not hear more from FlexoFold but after measures in a lab we could conclude that it was one of the propeller blades that was faulty. I got my hands on a new blade and It worked perfectly after that... Although they have absolutely appalling customer service, FlexoFold are one of the absolutely best propellers I have ever had my hands on.

It's always disheartening finding all the new problems with an old boat, and that's a big big project, but after all the work you'll have a big spacious family boat, so the effort is a good investment. I've wasted lots of time/effort in the past trying to "repair" interiors, and have come to the conclusion it's usually quicker and cheaper to pull everything out and start with an empty space (just as you're doing) The destruction is quick and finds all the problems at once and then the rebuilding process feels much better. It will be really interesting to see how you refit the boat ... especially for the cool Scandinavian climate.

+Kyle French Hello Kyle. It's a Westcruiser 32, built in 1974 Norway. They were built to be SAR and ambulance boats as well as shuttle boats. Mine is one of extremely few who were built for cruising. Sadly there isn't possible to save the interior in the pilothouse and the aft cabin as you could see from the video. But the forward section will be almost all original. At a later time closer to spring I will make a "Tour of the boat" video. Thanks for watching. :-D

Propane torch, Easy-Flo low temperature brazing rods and thick brass or bronze sheet to be shaped and brazed to the rear of the blades. (try to get the balance correct) The object of the exercise is to make the blades heavier in order to generate more centrifugal force. Plumbers soft solder could be used for prototyping as its much easier to undo if plans change. Thin light blades are useless if the propeller needs centrifugal force to hold it open in reverse.
