The fatal mistake of this video is that you mic'ed the amp, thus disguising how loud it will be---it's not how it would be used in a real setting. You can make a pocket-sized transistor radio sound loud if you mic it

Just found this review and it’s great! I’ve got a Les Paul and, like you, I want to move away from modelling amps (Catalyst) to a simple valve amp. Naturally I’m looking Marshalls to match the Gibson! Would you recommend the DSL5CR? That’s the one I’m considering but I’ve been told to look at the Blackstar HT5 too.

I got this amp 2 months ago, changed out the tubes for better tubes and put a 12AT7 in the V2 socket to tame the high gain channel a little and now I love this amp. I also have an Orange Crush 12 and a Bugera V5 and a Swart Atomic Jr. The Marshall is the most fun to play at the low volume levels I usually play at, it's the perfect bedroom amp.

@@jeremywho2289 Some tubes I already had, a Groove Tube 12AX7 and a Sylvania 5751 which is a 12AT7. The power tube is a Mullard 12AU7 I got from Amazon. Any decent tubes like JJ, EH or TungSol will sound better than the stock tubes.

Both together sounds brighter as the pickups are in parallel. Two resistances in parallel reduces the resistance and impedance a bit like how a lower output pickup has a lower impedance and resistance.

I've got the same 1983 model but in Arctic White which I bought new in early 1984. I wanted the black version for the same reason as you...fallen in love with the Edge's Strat, but my local music shop only had the white one in stock and in the days before on-line shopping, you had to take what you could find available. It cost £199 back then and the USA Strats in the shop were, I think, about £450 which was too much for me at the time. It was the only guitar I had for about 13 years when I started playing in a band and bought an Epiphone SG as a back-up. It was still my main gigging guitar for quite a few years. The only part that's been changed is the 5 way switch which I had to replace about 20 years ago. I don't gig with it any more as the frets are getting pretty worn but I still use it for home recording and sometimes take it to band rehearsal as a treat as it's one of the nicest guitars to play, even though I now have a couple of Fenders and a few other mid-range guitars. Hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed mine !

Awesome review and playing. If I could get a metallic orange or copper, especially with the pink model's iridescent pickguards, it would be a no-brainer as it's a very stylish guitar that sounds great. Thanks for this great review and very nice playing! Also I like both guitars, but the Hartwood ... wow. Some cheaper guitars have something special even they aren't playable well. Reminds me on Blood Red Shoe and the Tucson or the german "Hertie Casters". Can't decide wether to choose the 1CR as a bedroom amp (quiter playing at less watts), having the 5CR (should be too loud, have to be run with volume down, but ha a volume/gain for the clean) or going for modeling. But I also like to keep it simple and clean. Well, unfortunately - and you demo it a bit, the clean channel isn't that clean at the start (ok, humbucker) and there won't be a clean volume range. I like the Marshall sound, but also the clean tone. Not sure, how loud you can get in clean channel without much crunch, that part is missing a bit, 'cause you set it to 0.1 watt. Don't know if this combo will fit to me? Thanks in advance.

How long would you say the valves will last with 3-4 hours of daily use at lower to mid volumes? Your amp sounds great and I want one..
@zoostationjason Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comment, unfortunately I have no idea! I know people who have never changed the tube in amps they’ve gigged with for years and some folk who have had terrible luck with tubes going.
@rotepillenfresser4544 Жыл бұрын
Could last 4 years or even 20. Depends ... and you can't influence it. There's no standb and it seems the heating up is very fast. I always let the amps heat up for some minutes. Jason, how warm or hot gets this combo? When it gets hot you may open the back, but at 1 watt I don't expect much heating.
@lucid_delirium976 Жыл бұрын
I think I'm going to try my luck and buy it for home recording. I have a question.. Can the dsl1cr speaker cable (at the back) be plugged to a separate solid state Poweramp pedal or solid state head?? (such as the orange micro dark or the exh 5mm). My goal would be to use the speaker of the combo only ( for daily noodling etc to prolong tube life).
@rotepillenfresser4544 Жыл бұрын
@@lucid_delirium976 Wouldn't save the tubes by not using them, makes no sense since this combo isn't that expensive and rare. I think this combo is self biased and so you only have to change them pairwise (matched ones). You can detach the speaker cable for using it in amp, yes. 16 Ohms. The speaker itself only cost around 25-35 $€. Go better for a 12"
@lucid_delirium976 Жыл бұрын
@@rotepillenfresser4544 I'm not sure I explained my question clear enough. I have a solid state Poweramp+preamp pedal. It's made to power any guitar cabinet of any ohms. What i was wondering was If the speaker cable of the dsl could be disconnected from the dsl, and then plugged into my Poweramp pedal. The dsl would be turned off. The 8" speaker in the dsl would get powered by my Poweramp pedal. Is this possible? And wouldn't this method prolong tube life?( seeing as the dsl would be turned off. )

@zoostationjason Жыл бұрын
Let me know how it sounds!!
@rotepillenfresser4544 Жыл бұрын
When living private go for the 5 watts,, also due the better controllable clean channel, but there's not that great difference you might expect in loudness. If you halve the loudness of 100 watts you'll have a 10 watts of a valve combo, halve 10 watts -> 1 watt, 1 watt -> 0.1 watt. In dB that's always 3 dB. Check out the comparision DSL 5CR vs 20CR. That's not that much and the reach both more than 100 dB, think 107 vs 112 dB. That's too much for your ears. You should better go for a bigger combo with a 12" speaker. The 5CR should fits a 12" with some work, the 1CR won't take a 10" as far as I read. The 1 Watt is still too much for a room, be aware!
