Beautiful! Living at across the street from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar here in San Diego, I'm partial to the Bue Angels. Although, the recent Freewing F-16 V2 High Performance 90mm looks very nice too. I'm on the fence between these two.

@davidgerlach1132 I have the E-Flite 80mm F-16 T-bird. And also the 70mm. I am discovering that flying the 70mm is much easier and far less stressful. There are less things to go wrong and it is more forgiving. I prefer flying it over the 80mm for those reasons alone. Sure the gear aren't nearly as detailed. I wish there was an equivalent F-18 Blue Angel (70mm) like that. That would be perfect. In the end. A $500- $600 jet is way more complicated and if you miss one thing on a preflight... it could be disastrous. I'm on my 2nd Freewing Blue Angel now for that very reason.... to many functions and unforgiving. $380-$400 70mm flies great and is less stressful in the air.

Good job Charlie! I am currently helping a buddy build his November variant Huey. He’s learning that scale is pretty reliant on research and innovation. So far we have upgraded the FLIR system on the nose and looking to do the same for the ASE fittings on the nose. Tyler Gray model’s is able to customize the accessories that really make this model pop! We will be replacing the ALQ-144 along with some of the antennas. Adam Martin at scale warbirds pilots will be providing the custom pilots (hint - get the pilots in the blue flight suits). Adam will customize the pilots for you if you desire. We also replaced the stock blades with Align 800 blades. These blades are wide cord and more scale to the iconic Huey blade. It also gives an audible pop when approaching or turning. I have the “D” variant and scaled it to US Army, Viet Nam livery in the gunship configuration. Mine definitely needed weathering and the scale details to make it come alive. I’m glad you guys have joined the Roban fleet. They aren’t perfect, but with a little attention, the can really turn heads.

I can't be sure. I have a satellite antenna receiver in there to help ensure that I always have reception to the receiver. Whether that is effective or not, I don't know. But with an expensive model, i thought, why not? Also i don't know if you are running you're throttle through the blue control box along with the flight controls. My throttle signal cable runs straight from ESC to receiver. But no worries. I've crashed my plane twice and now have to use my backup plane still new in the box. Not gonna repair the original one three times.

The blue boxes are crap. I have only had 2. My F18 was malfunctioning right out the box. Removed it and installed a light controller, hooked everything directly to the receiver. My 70mm F16 has a smaller blue box which worked for about 12 flights them the gear started acting up. Removed it, hooked everything directly to the receiver. Both have worked flawlessly since. Freewing makes nice planes, but I'll never put another one of the blue boxes in the air, unless i throw it towards the trashcan.

😆 that's funny... throw it towards the trash can... I don't mind keeping it in there for the lights. I Probably should put the gear on a Y and direct to the receiver because I can't afford to have that not work. There's no sequencing I guess because the doors are mechanical.

@@markhyde43 The box is simply an unnecessary potential, and likely from my experience, failure point. Simply don't need it. Even if there were sequenced gear doors, a sequencer is ten dollars, and a failure in it, it isn't very likely to cut power to the entire servo train like this box can.

I'll have to recheck it. I have damaged it since this video and have replaced the fuselage and gear. Haven't Flown it yet this year due to weather and season. But i will rebalance it and do it again. I do know that the CG was set much farther aft than the called out CG. I have a local friend with the same plane started near his CG, which fly's great for him. I can't explain that nose over at take off. And it's been a minute since it's flown. I'll have to rewatch some of these videos and check my transmitter to see what's dialed in for trims. My sense I probably did have to trim down a lot and i believe i re set my elevator neutral all ready.... But I still had the dip after takeoff even after that. We'll see with this new fuselage, gear and elevators what i does.

I loved that plane. It came a bit beat up in the box. if I remember right. It had large dents from being crushed in places and obvious attempts repairs to foam and paint under the nose. It also had the older gear and that was long after the- new ones were coming out with the upgraded gear retracts. It was probably older stock being that the blue nose was very hard to find. I ended up wrecking that one after losing orientation against the sun. I had also lost my original Red Tail which came in better condition than this. That one I got bit cocky on those low passes over the grass strip. Wing was to far over and caught the tail grass and it cartwheeled all the way down the runway throwing pieces everywhere. I love the FMS 1450 though so much that now I am flying another Red Tail and have a 2nd new one in the box..... just in case I get to cocky with this again. But I've tamed down my low level flying a lot now. I keep it above the taller grass now, even over the runway lol.

Sounds like you gotta get in there and program the esc. I heard a surge which is the LVC kicking in. Timing is also too high... worth changing... but man does the thunderbird scheme look good though!! I have the 90mm freewing version but want this one instead! Good video!

Now that I have figured out how to adjust those settings with the transmitter... my current ESC LVC is set (default) to 3.4 and the timing is defaulted to 15. I know you said to set timing to 5-7. Mine will go to 5. Do I really need to disable lvc or reduce it a little lower to say 3.2?

Thanks. I ended up having to replace the fuselage and gear last October... maybe September...after I tried to do a dirty roll just on the last pass before landing it. That's the bad thing about having flight modes with different rates. If you forget to switch before doing something crazy, bad things can happen. Was probably a bit too slow as well. I like to be as close to scale as possible, but you can't give up too much speed if doing dirty rolls. It's all good now though. New fuselage and its back to looking good again. On top of that, I have a second new one in the box (newer version with the reverse ESC) just in case. You know? I'm flattered that you watched this. I've seen most of your videos going all the way back to the 64mm days. That was some good stuff and so is your current content. So with the Lemon 7-ch stabilizing receiver, if you lose your orientation or have one of those panic situations, can you flip a switch and the receiver will auto-level the plane to avoid a crash (provided you're not too low)? And have you tested it and found it to actually work in that panic/self-leveling situation?
@markhyde43
@markhyde43 Жыл бұрын
It's not a panic switch... but if you switch from normal gyro stabilizing mode to what is equivalent to Safe Mode (like on a Spektrum AS3X receiver)... it will self level when you let go of the sticks (sticks centered). So if your flying in manual mode (no gyro) or in stabilized mode (gyro on to counter the wind) and you lose orientation or lose it in the sun... you can just flip the gyro switch to safe (auto level I guess) and let go of the control sticks and it will go to the straight and level that you pe set it to. So your gyro switch is in effect... your panic switch if you use it that way
@SteveGergetz
@SteveGergetz Жыл бұрын

@markhyde43

@@SteveGergetz I've tested it and it does work. You do have to make sure the plane is in the atitude you you want it to level at when you do the initial set up. Mine sometimes goes to a very shallow bank or turn depending on how the plane is trimmed. It's hard to pre-set a perfect level that flies straight without any slight variance in the air. But it will save the plane in those circumstances. But for me? Unfortunately, when I've gotten in a pickle, I usually don't get to the safe stitch until it's too late. I always forget about it and do what comes instinctively.... try to fly out of the situation hoping to get lucky. That often doesn't work and I tell myself in hindsight...... Man. I set the Elevators to 46mm-47mm at 100% travel distance end to end Ailerons... couldn't get the same travel on both sides... so LH aileron was 25mm up, 23mm down RH aileron was 30mm up, 23mm down Rudder: LH... 33mm outboard throw & 25mm inboard throw RH... 30mm outboard throw & 25mm onboard throw. In my servo settings.. I bumped the aileron servo travel up to 120 because I wasn't getting the manual called out travel distance. Then I set my rates up as flight modes.... Speed, cruise and landing. My aileron Low rates (speed mode) are at 70% rate.... 50% expo Mid rates...(cruise mode) at at 80% with 50% expo. High rates...(landing mode) at 100% with 30% expo. Elevators are... low rate (speed mode) 75%with 50% expo. Now I will change this a bit. I tried to do the blue angel dirty roll with the gear down and at about 25 feet high. Wouldn't roll fast enough and it stalled and pancakes into the ground. Repaired it with a new fuselage and new landing gear..... thus the reason I bought the second one new in the box as a future backup of I wreck this one again. Sp do not try an aileron roll with the gear down unless you are very high and know that you are in high rates. I think I was still in cruise mode at the time (mid rates). I may have to set it up differently so that my rates go to high wherever I lower the gear. It's too much to keep track of. So beware. Anyway. With these rates.... it flys very scale in mid rates at cruise and high speed. You just have to be conscious of where your rates are at all times and all configurations.

I didn’t know that Harbor Freight offered a P-51 Mustang. Thanks for sharing! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨✈️

They did for many years back in the day. You could find them in most any HF store.

Does it not have throttle control it looked like it was flat out the whole time.

It usually operates between 2/3 to full throttle. It seems to have a very short power range... so I generally keep it at the higher end . I'm used to much faster models than this and this can fly up to 7 minutes at near full throttle.

Very nice! Sounds incredibly scale.

Probably because it has a prop gearbox. That's what most of the sound is.

Wow !! Had one at 12 as a kid. 22 now, went to harbor freight the other day to try and get one and they no longer sell it. That’s a relic! Good flying!

Last time I saw one at HF was about 4 years ago I think. They were nice and inexpensive. But to up grade them with the 2.4 GHz system it ended up costing about a much in the end as the better name brand P-51 models of similar size like Flightline. There are more it now of that size and they all fly better than this one. But I'm very partial to these. Like you said. Kind a nostalgic and it's a relic. I do have one in the box that I never assembled. Guess I thought I was going to go through them and would need more backups lol.

Keep an eye on market place, a guy was selling on here on Wisconsin for 50 bucks last week but unfortunately on the other side of the state 😒

Almost took mine out this morning. I have this one and the fms grey pnp one. Great planes. I had an elevator servo die right after I landed my fms bae hawk 80mm! Glad it was on the ground. It was an easy swap.

Yeah. They are pretty easy to change on the 64mms. The E-flte/FMS variants.

Some of us aren't fortunate enough to have one handy, so we have to wear a hat cam. You can't see what it's seeing while it's on your head.

The maiden flight of mine wasn't quite that sketchy.. 😎 I generally move the aileron and elevator linkages in one hole on the servo arms. My aileron rates are set to 70% with 25% expo in low rates and 85% with 33% in high rates. The elevator is 60% with 15% expo in low rates and 80% with 25% expo in high rates. Ordinarily, I want my high rates set to 100%. When you decrease the travel in your radio, it lowers its resolution. And since the servo doesn't rotate as far, the positioning accuracy of control surfaces isn't quite as good. The next time I get mine out, I'm going to move the linkages in another hole on the servo arms and increase the rates to make the servos rotate a little more. Also, my F-18 has a Spektrum AR636 AS3X/SAFE receiver that I reprogrammed with SAFE. So, I can flip a switch and it'll fly straight and level. My 73 year old eyes aren't what they used to be..
