YAAAY, Another PK episode, Giants valley is so cool, and well done!
@NewAge3748 ай бұрын
Hi wonderful episode and such great progress! Thanks for highlighting your thought process for using boulders and fewer plants to the right effect. I must say I think the open shelter shade structure make so much sense. Even if not as massive as sauropods who most definitely were gigantothermic (their bodily processes keeping their entire system warm) large theropods and ornithopods would not have needed hard shelter in more tropical environments. Even if it gets chilly at night, these animals thrived in hot environments so building massive structures to house them seems like a waste of in-game resources as well as your own sanity. In my opinion it looks more realistic as a park this way. Baryonyx is confirmed to arrive in Early Access but the devs plans might extend beyond 2024 before releasing fully. I'm sure they'll love the habitat you made for Charonosaurus. On the topic of Spinosaurus not fitting in dense bushes, the areas were it was found sure were deltas and marshes, but on the drier parts massive forests must have grown. After all, there are large sauropods like Aegyptosaurus and Paralititan found living there too. When I see your interpretation of a slightly denser woodland, it's easy to imagine that such large animals would have comfortably wandered through there. Having your Deinocheirus mixed in with other animals is a great idea, it's nice that you made the exhibit future proof. The devs, unfortunately haven't shared what the fate of Gallimimus and Prenocephale is, though they were part of the original 50. If you don't mind me correcting you, though I think it was just a slip-up on your end, saying ¨Gallimimus and other ornithischians¨ is not correct: both Deinocheirus and Gallimimus are ornithomimosaurs, a branch of theropods and thus saurischians. Prenocephale is an ornithischian however, part of the marginocephalians.

Glad you liked the episode, the shade structure is indeed more a relief from the sun or rain than temperature extremes as they wouldn't really exist in this climate. I do sometimes get carried away and build for animals that aren't in the game yet, but the exhibits are still filled at least and will eventually get their proper inhabitants. I did indeed mean ornithomimosaurs, I just said the first four syllables and my brain autofilled the rest lol.

Such vibes in this park as always! I can't stop repeating how refreshing it is to see players give the animals lots of space to roam. There must be a trick to making exhibits not look empty. Perhaps woodlands and parklands are among the hardest habitats to recreate because we tend to ignore the undergrowth and just plant some trees with grass underneath. I would love to see you step back and take us with you in your creative process where you decide where to place clumps of foliage, where does it naturally grow etcetera. I prefer a guide format over a speed build though. I also love how you did the rock walls under the Paraceratherium walkway. Again, a little guide for making artificial as well as natural rock formations look as intended would be fantastic Finally, regarding tree guards, I wonder if there is a correlation where they are less necessary if the habitat is less densely populated with browsing animals but offers more trees. This way individual plants are not targeted as often and have the opportunity to grow a little.
@Mealie10 ай бұрын
Glad you like the zoo. I think next episode I'll go in more depth on how I plan the foliage for each space, especially since I'll have enclosures with a varying amount of foliage densities to show off. (I don't really like speed builds either, but I can show you my thoughts with what I've built already). I do need to look more into tree guards. They're usually put in to prevent rubbing which can wear the tree down. Browsing can be an issue, but a fence around the tree won't really stop that as the tree will usually grow over its guard. The main places I've seen tree guards used IRL are for larger herbivores like rhinos and buffalos (with varying usage), so I will look more into it, as well as alternative methods of tree protection like rocks and boulders.

Can I just thank you again for making this not just dry entertainment but also a little course of zoological parks throughout history? In terms of architecture it tells also the story of how people used to see animals from a very anthropocentric experience. And this project just keeps on giving, following your own rhythm of adding onto it, taking stuff out, changing around, without following just what the DLCs are bringing to the table. And since you did mention Prehistoric Kingdom in this video, would I be wrong to assume that you might have given thought to starting a similar chronological project but with extinct animals? Hehehe ;)
@Mealie10 ай бұрын
Glad you like the series. The PK video I was referencing was just my normal series, Giants Valley. No new series I'm afraid. I don't even know how I'd do a chronological series since, well, it's a dinosaur game that doesn't even have any recently extinct species lol
@NewAge37410 ай бұрын
@@MealieI think you might have forgotten about the mammals in the game. But what I referred to is creating your own universe in which somehow cloning dinosaurs started a century ago but the zoo architecture was still at at the same stage. And then you progress through the decades with the species you imagine would be cloned not as early.
@Mealie10 ай бұрын
@@NewAge374 By recently extinct I meant stuff that was kept in captivity like quagga, but I see your point. I don't think I will do a historical zoo with dinosaurs since I already have Klein Tuin Zoo as an outlet for historic zoo stuff.

The garden area is looking fantastic! Thanks to the new foliage and to your delicate placement haha. The contrast in particular is really convincing compared to the habitats and wilder areas of the zoo: budget has limits after all. Great update on this project! I think people might watch this and think it's a very barebones game but you make parks in a very controlled manner, repeating the foliage that's realistic for this region, using the same building materials for the structures, and following a similar, low-budget, building style for the enclosures. But they'd be wrong because they don't see the care you put into choosing all these items that I easily recognise, so I can replicate it easily. That's one thing PK will do better than PZ: sharing modular builds and ideas. Also big shoutout for giving the animals much more space than the technical minimum: if you have the space in your park, why not use it? By the way, you should look for the decals and broken items they added in the Halloween update, you'll love them in this park ;) Just want to give a little historical pointer to what you mentioned about the presumed Torvosaurus. Back when people were digging up fossils at the Tendaguru site, the area was known as German East Africa: effectively a colony so it was not a coincidence an expedition took the fossils and stored them away in German museums. I feel that a modern park would have an information sign at least, if not a whole exhibition asking the question what should be done to fossils dug up today or in the past, who should have the right to study and exhibit them. It's a debate very much alive in paleontological and anthrapological circles that unfortunately still uncovers colonialist attitudes. For a contemporary example, look up Ubirajara.
@Mealie Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I do know the story of German expeditions in Tanzania. I don't think I'd put up signs because there is no easy way to create detailed signs in the game at the moment, and I also don't want to start putting up potentially controversial signs in a fictional dinosaur zoo.
