Watched this for about the fist 2.29. Couldn't remember or produce character names or clearly state the scene in description. Not knocking ya but I feel ya failed the book report by that 2.29.. Maybe make some notes as you read and prepare for a presentation whether you liked the book or not. I read door to December mid 90s as a teen and loved it. Was actually considering to read it again and wanted a refresher

SPOILERS I absolutely ADORED the first half of this book, but once the cellar door shut (if you know, you know), the book just fell off for me. The second half was incredibly convoluted and frankly Jane made a lot of really poor, and illogical decisions in that half of the book. It was literally us watching someone go insane for 7 days while they shot up cocaine and ate odd good to save someone in a basement. But, I did enjoy the book over all, for the most part. It was just such a let down to have the story shift so hard and go from 5 stars to like 2 stars that quickly.

Loved Phantoms and It. Another good Koontz book is The Taking, which is very similar to War of the Worlds but maybe with some Dark Tower inspiration? If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. No movie for this one, that I know of.

Interesting take. I thought the animal cruelty was a perfect depiction of the animalistic nature overtaking her and exemplified the point of the book. I appreciated the themes in this book but thought the writing was absurdly boring I really had to force myself through this book

I agree over describing characters like the guys with the scratchy red beard.. but it started off well with the hiker or who ever getting killed thay scene was good in my opinion and the flash backs came out of no where I feel he has h.p Lovecraft inspired writing thats why he goes into to much detail if the order was more chronological it would have been much better but the cannibal holocaust part 2 was pretty good imo

Omg.. the blacksmith scene.. when he's talking about watching it so the tool doesn't go bad.. that whole passage may be one of the most beautifully written paragraphs in literature.

I just finished this book today. I only read books in what little free time I have at work. Since we're not allowed on phones, I read books. Because of this, it took me a little over a month to complete. I can wholeheartedly say that I did not enjoy this story, but I can understand the appeal to those who did. It just felt like parts dragged on. I felt that the whole teen pregnancy aspect of the story took up too much of the first half. It felt more like a drama than a horror thriller. It kept foreshadowing major plot points in a way that was phrased like "so and so had a bad feeling that this will happen, but that couldn't be possible... right? *winks at reader*" A gypsy literally looks into the future and reveals the characters' fates that the reader can easily put together through contextual clues. As a result, everything was spoiled, and nothing was impactful. Also, a lot of things were attributed to chance or God or a higher being. That aspect in particular felt like a cop out at times. Characters who lied about things when they had to just because they had a "gut feeling". There are characters who fates are unclear, like the mother or ghost. overall 4/10.

I've been a huge Koontz fans since reading Phantoms in 1983. I agree with your assessment of his work. I liked Odd Thomas. Watchers had way too much romance, the religious angle of Phantoms was unnecessary, and Cold Fire served as a blueprint for a long run of Koontz works. I enjoyed The Voice of the Night. Good book. I loved The Bad Place, but the reveal about the villain was extremely bizarre. Dragon Tears is awesome, with one of the best Koontz villains ever. What a ride. Twilight Eyes is a great one. I loved the atmosphere and pacing. Fun book.

SPOILER******* I liked the Ruins, but I liked the movie more. Halfway through the book, I already knew everyone was going to die. At least in the movie, they created a very smart ploy to get out of their situation. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable read.

Blood meridian was the first book I read by him, and it DID bother me that he doesn't use quotations because I'm someone who pictures things as I read, and it's easier for my brain to "transition" to conversational scenes when I see quotations. I'm also pretty sure I read slow because I play full on movies in my head lmao. Great video! I'm giving this book a read next.

WOW!!! Agree 110 percent. Descriptive writing overdone to the point I was screaming STOP, PLEASE! "Say one thing once, why say it again" to quote David Byrne/Talking Heads. I too listened to the audible book and found myself constantly falling asleep, waking up, and then back tracking to find the last thing I recognized. Unfortunately, this was difficult because much of the prose was similar. My take is that perhaps if this was a book taking place in the U.S.A. I could relate more and would have been more engaged.... perhaps.

I really enjoyed this one and completely agree. I did finish Holly and yes, the covid doesn't stop all the way to the end. I love a good horror novel, it's my favorite genre. My favorite author is Stephen King, but I have never read one of his books to learn a life lesson or learn about politics. I just want a good story that I can climb into and can't put down. King has always injected his political beliefs into his stories, but over the past decade or two, it seems to be taking over and that's super annoying. Don't go away Edward. I miss your book reviews. Keep writing.

Hello! I have read it in Russian, and really liked everything about the book:the plot, the characters, time slip. I want to ask the words Sarah as her panic grew, hear when her daughter is missing and Martin shouting her name "Gerthie!Gerthie!Gerthie!" she hears other words and his voice is getting distorted. So I need the words she heard instead of Gerthie. Approximately at 67th page. Sorry for my bad English, I really need it please!!

I gorged on Koontz' library for a year or so. I reached many of the same conclusions. The clichés and tiresome literary tools rubbed me like puns do - irritating. Criticism aside, he has some uncanny brilliance in hooking readers into the plot so deeply that they blow off sleep to plow through chapters. It's that mystique he lays between chapter transitions that makes him easily in the Top 5 contemporary authors. His stories are a psychological trap for us to enjoy. I'm disappointed that Hollywood did him dirty. The movies I built in my mind from reading his stuff were A grade. Keep blasting Koontz' name!

I kind of agree with you on this book. I read it as a audiobook, and I become so little invested in the plot, that I could not keep track of what happened. Its kind of rear that that happens. Another book review called this The scariest novel ever made. I was not scared for a second

Lester buys a rifle......yet never uses it to kill game/animals. The food in jail is much better than what Lester normally has. The sheriff/law found 7 bodies in one of the final chapters......I presume all women, since I don't think Lester would carry/drag back men to this hiding place. Keeping women? Shades of Jeffrey Dahmer? Keeping them close as a means of possession?? Possession in the sense of serial killers.....?

The Koontz "Black Neon" Berkeley mass market paperbacks were his best...the smell of the yellowing and worn pages on my copies takes me back to childhood. I think Intensity was his last good book and he's been a hack ever since (with the exception of the Odd Thomas series).
