I'm playing the game through the Open XCOM mod/port on Windows 10, with the base game taken from the Steam release. It sounds a bit different, but I love it anyways. Love this theme, they did great work. Edit: That would be because of the audio format the game is using, Adlib.

If you are willing to go down a small rabbit hole, you can download a program called "VirtualMidiSynth" which will allow you to load a custom soundfont, then you can change the music sounds to whatever tickles your fancy. I recorded this in DOS using an old XP laptop to capture the sound, but if you like the way this plays, you can find a soundfont called "AweROMGM.sf2" that will get you, like, 99% of the way there. But there are awesome options to choose from, and a lot of work went into making some amazing soundfonts.

Aw, it doesn't play the movie. The version I used to play as a kid didn't have any sound effects. The movie works way better without them but for whatever reason everything on youtube has the movie with the sound effects.

This is how I originally played it back in 95 with my compaq presario. Soundblaster for my sounds really good, specially "New mars" or the OST of the brefing when you have to attack cydonia.

I remember that game was able to do amazing things with a PC speaker, like playing actual sounds, and not just square wave beeps.

I remember this as well, and this is only one of two programs that I know will do this. The second is QView, a DOS multimedia player, can also do this. Such amazing tech for its time!

When all aliens got killed in X-COM, there were still plenty of them in UFO2Extraterrestrials for your rifles ;-) The UFO 2 features cover versiones of the original music.
