First wave of Chinese hakka community came to india in 1778, they were the owners of sugar Mills during that time , but during the WW 1 a significant amount of hakka people migrated to India, they were engaged in mostly leather factories or Indo-chinese cuisine restaurant buisness, to be honest they were very rich at that time. Everything was fine until new pollution laws came during early 2000's , government took strict actions to reduce pollution, Kolkata (where hakka people lived at that time) was the most polluted city at that time , so government persuaded hakka leather factory owners to relocate their factory to a different place in that same area , and to follow new advanced machinary to reduce pollution, but the Chinese liked to live in a single community, so some problems arose. Wealthy hakka people immigrated to other countries, and after the war things were not the same as before, ofcourse literate and youngsters were ok with hakka people but some older generation didn't like them at that time, so more people immigrated to other countries. Now the majority of hakka people here are elderly, the younger generation work in other countries and send money back to their parents. But there are still a significant number of hakka youngsters who live in India in different cities and some work in entertainment industry too. But now leather factories are closed or bought by others and relocated, most hakka people are engaged in restaurant buisness of Indo-chinese cuisine, and trust me, it's a big thing here. Maybe we can call it our traditional food now, because it's totally different from real Chinese food, just some ingredients are same. So back to the point, there hakka people engaged in restaurant buisness are filthy rich now. And they don't want to leave India. The real culprits were the leather factory owners who were rich but provoked a big chunk of poor hakka people residing here to think that they are being discriminated against.
