I went to Buffalo State College back in the 1980's. I sure hated what my parents' generation did - destroying a lot of Olmstead's beautiful work with the Scajaquada Expressway and other highways built for the car culture. I'm glad people have been working to preserve the remnants. But I did love being a young person in Buffalo. It was a more livable, friendlier city than NYC. I don't know how Buffalo is now, though.
@grandillusion42583 күн бұрын
WHAT ?!?! Somebody actually designed this dump? Perhaps back in the day it was fairly ok but, damn !! Its time to move ahead and to stop dwelling in the past. Buffalo is like that balding, 260 pound, bearded, pot bellied father that keeps recalling and attempting to relive his high school glory days. The old guard just can't come to grips with practicality over nostalgia. The city is completely infested with 75-150 year old eyesores, including a great deal of their schools, the skyway and thruway that never should have been built in the first place, the garbage pile of rusted, rotted grain elevators and other relics that are of no earthly good to any Buffalonian. The downtown area is completely unusable except for legal and government business. Other than the Bisons, Bandits and Sabers there's absolutely no reason, whatsoever, for anyone outside of the Buffalo city limits to even consider a trip to the city. There's nothing there !! ok, big deal... a run down zoo and an art museum..... and that's about it. Buffalo seems to think that "festivals", bars, restaurants and "culture" are some kind of unique quality when in fact its just a big cafeteria to the people that already live there and are so damned bored that even a two bit restaurant is better than spending one more god damned miserable minute at home staring at the brick wall next door. If not for the local college kids, Buffalo would be a ghost town because people just don't have that kind of disposable income, so they pretty much rely on the influx of college student with Daddy Dollars to keep the bars and clubs open. Most of the infrastructure is just basic and the population is just stagnant, in day to day, somebody please get me the hell out of here, survival mode.

Restore Humboldt Parkway
@ezafcrash398613 күн бұрын
I had no idea that my city was regarded so highly. I am a student at University of Toronto going into urban planning, and a large part of that reason is to try and help Buffalo. When I think of my hometown, I think of the bone-headedness that went into its design in the 50s and 60s. Despite the fact I live in an area of the suburbs that wasn’t even conceived when olmstead drew up his designs, I am only a short distance from his park system. It’s really sad to hear that the east side once had a great parkway, matching like the one on the west side. It’s so frustrating to hear not only that it was destroyed, but that it ended up cutting off the east side in an act of systematic racism. For those who don’t know, the new Humboldt parkway is LITERALLY cut into the ground in a massive trench. It has very few bridges and it isolated majority black neighborhoods. In the time since, the East Side became the most unstable part of the city. Buffalo needs to become a leader again in development city-wide, as well as equity and fairness for the east side especially. It all starts with the planting of trees, access to green space, and good ways to access these amenities. Here’s to hoping they rebuild Humboldt parkway and make this city into the place Buffalonians deserve. Go Bills!!

S/O Franklin Park!!
@JonFrumTheFirst2 ай бұрын
Olmsted was an elitist who wanted to 'uplift the spirits' of the working class. That is, to life them up to the level of normal people - that is, the Yankee bourgoisie of the time. He specified that there should be no sports played in the park - no rough and tumble working class men playing rough and tumble games like baseball. Just picnicers having their souls purified by taking in the views. Oh, and by the way - no zoo either. As Olmsted imagined it, the park was a failure. They put in a zoo AND a golf course, and then ran a roadway for automobiles through the heart of it. And the working class of Boston liked it that way. If they wanted to appreciate a faux nature experience, the Arboretum was just next door.
@RobinKarson-g8t2 ай бұрын
These statements are inaccurate. Olmsted wanted to keep professional sports out of urban parks--mainly to discourage betting and drinking. The film shows many other kinds of sports historically played in Franklin Park, like tennis and golf. (Did you watch the film?) And he and Vaux included attractions like zoos in other urban parks (think Central Park Zoo). Of course, he believed that souls can be uplifted (not "purified") by "taking in the views." His insights into the importance of nature to human health were key in establishing our National Parks.
@JonFrumTheFirst2 ай бұрын
@@RobinKarson-g8t Not professional sports - just the kind of sports working men played in their time off. And tennis and golf were added AFTER Olmsted designed the park - they were no part of his design. In fact, the golf course was against everything he did. People were supposed to be able to wander the fields, not watch for stray golf balls. They ever brought in sheep to pasture on the fields because Olmstend didn't want the grass 'manicured.' And Central Park is irrelevant to THIS park - Olmsted wanted no zoo and no gardens - which also went in against his wishes. Only a small fraction of today's park remains from Olmsted's plan - he would have a heart attack if he saw it today.
@Swamp_Hobbit2 ай бұрын
@@JonFrumTheFirst I'm reading the book this is based on now, and it seems like Oldsted was aware that recreation areas were needed very early on. There were spaces set aside for lawn tennis and baseball. What he didn't want was crowds of thousands of spectators trampling the grounds with organized sports leagues. The design of the park was intended to keep playing fields at the edges of the park to make them easily accessible, and to keep the wilderness and the "valley" sections for picnicking and generally getting away from the urban noise and crowds.
@JonFrumTheFirst2 ай бұрын
@@Swamp_Hobbit Olmsted had to be squeezed into alloting space for playing games, so he put in the Playstead in the northwest corner, as far as possible away from the heart of the park, which is what became the golf course. And to make the point, rather than mow the grass, they brought in sheep to pasture on the field to give it that rustic look - it was all about the aesthetic experience of presented 'views,' not the satisfiction of the working people of the city.

This is a wonderful overview of the history of this lovely park and the community that surrounds it. Understanding this history highlights why Franklin Park is at risk of development and emphasizes its importance as a refuge for the surrounding communities. It stands out as one of the few spaces where the Black community can feel a sense of ownership, especially as the city continues to displace minorities from their neighborhoods.
@JonFrumTheFirst2 ай бұрын
Bwahahaha! The Black community can't feel a sense of ownership on the street they live? With not a White person in sight, who do they think owns their neighborhood? And displacing minorities - do you mean Mayor Wu's decision to 'sanctuary city' the Black community with illegal immigrants? Like taking over a youth community center to warehouse illegals? If so, then yeah - minority on minority crime. Except you don't mention the large Latino community that borders the park in Jamaica Plain. No ownership for them?

Great documentary about the history of Franklin Park, which in many ways is a hidden gem to many in the city today due to disinvestment and institutional racism. It's a bit curious to see how some who are in such support of Olmsted's vision for the park speak positively about the golf course in the country park ( which costs you $62 to play on right now and imposes on about half of the parks footprint) but they are in strong opposition to the public-private partnered stadium proposal in the Ante park (an area meant to draw people to the park through various attractions) which is actually returning land back to the playstead, proposing a fund for consistent maintenance of the park, and keeping public or BPS access to the stadium for 90% of field hours.
