Great video... thanks so much. I'm just north of Toronto, ON (CAN) and have the 3ton model with a 2-ton coil but with the Ecobee 3 lite. I have my Bosch running with only a Y1 (though I'm thinking of hooking up the Y2) and it ran perfectly during the summer months. I have my cool differential set a 1F (0.6C) and have ZERO setback, and it maintained a 75f (24C) with zero effort. I did have to lower the air handler fan speed though to increase more dehumidification. Now it's winter in heating mode but I'm finding the compressor fan to be running at a high speed even though the temperature outside is about 37f (3C), and is much louder than in cooling mode.. I wondering if I hook up the Y2 wire to enable the Stage 2 setting and allowing the air handler fan to run at a higher CFM, if this would change how the compressor fan operates? Would the compressor fan increase even more or decrease as a result?
@timdestasiohvac21 күн бұрын
It will be louder in heating mode. The outdoor fan will run at high speed to absorb as much heat into the outdoor coil as possible. The compressor will also periodically speed up as part of an oil return mode if it runs in 1st stage for a long time. Since you're in a colder environment you definitely need to hook up Y2 with reverse staging in heating and cooling as I show in the video.
@chimaican0120 күн бұрын
@@timdestasiohvac thank you so much for your kind response. I'm going to hook up the Y2 wire for 2nd stage cooling/heating but I will likely not require it. Cooling went fine without the need of 2nd stage during the summer (1st stage ran for 1hr no problem to maintain 1F differential). As for heating, so far at 4C (40F), it has been able to maintain the 1F, and because we have low cost natural gas, my furnace will likely switch over at -1.1C (30F) due to the economic crossover. I was just more wondering about the noise level and if a 2nd stage would be louder.
@timdestasiohvac20 күн бұрын
@@chimaican01 I rarely go into 2nd stage in cooling and DEFINITELY don't need it in heating but I am on the NC coast lol. You have the opposite problem. Hook it up and see what it does.

Just turned down a R410A condenser swap from a customer that purchased the heat pump himself online. Guy was saying it was a like for like swap and easy install. He had a 3 ton heat pump on a 1300 square foot house, a 20"x25"x1" return grille, a 14" flex duct servicing the return side, and (x10) 6" supply runs. Lol. I asked why he was replacing the outdoor unit and he said that the compressor failed. I bet it did. I was very polite and explained the glaring problems with his system design and told him it was outside my scope of work. He was still a little fanny hurt that I refused the job. As people become tighter than 3 coats of paint, these situations will become commonplace, especially as manufacturers and online distributors cater to selling to homeowners.

Do they have any filters that incorporate activated carbon for VOC and odor removal for this model? Or do they have a configuration that they recommend that can put a lower rated MERV filter before this filter that has the activated carbon in the filter to achieve the same results? I ask these questions for people that don’t want to use products that change the chemistry of the air. Thank you.
@timdestasiohvac28 күн бұрын
@@Ryan-RM This does not change the chemistry in the air like an electronic air cleaner would. The electrostatic capabilities are solely in the filter media not in the air that passes through it. There are some adsorption features built in which allow TVOCs to chemically bond, yet not to the effect that activated carbon would. The best way to lower TVOCs would be dilution with fresh air and if that air also passes through the filter, it would be pretty clean.
@Ryan-RM28 күн бұрын
@@timdestasiohvac Thanks for responding. What I meant was I know this product does not change the chemistry of the air but an ionizer they (Dustfree) might offer to pair with this filter would. I was simply wondering since the MERV 16 filter does not have carbon for VOCs and odors, how they (Dustfree) would best handle that without the use of an ionizer to pair with this filter? Thank you again Tim.
@JustinBright-u9p26 күн бұрын
Typically odors tend to become an issue in a commercial building at 800 parts per million of CO2 because of the concentration of human bodies. If you're that concerned in a residential application you mean be better served with ventilating outside air into the building to help dilute concentrations of smells rather than carbon. The typical carbon impregnated filter that has less than a 16th of an inch of carbon on top of the filter is pointless. It may only last hours.

I currently have sensorpush sensors at the start and end of the return duct and at the start and end of supply (to measure split). I struggled for a long time with humidity issues from my unit. The thing that had the greatest impact for me was shimming the unit so it leaned slightly towards the drain. When I stuck a bore camera in the unit I noticed a significant amount of water sitting below the coil and the primary drain not being utilized. The unit is in a horizontal config.
