How do you think Jane did this? I would never have the patience. Why don’t you think starching fabric would help? Thx.
@PoolesPiecing
@PoolesPiecing 27 күн бұрын
I’m not sure if starching would help or hurt, but for me with those super skinny points, starch keeps the fabric more rigid and harder to be supple around the point to properly tuck it under.

Don’t the staples risk breaking fabric threads?
@PoolesPiecing
@PoolesPiecing 7 ай бұрын
Always test staples before using this technique, but really it’s the same thing as pins and needles. They are about the same as a sewing machine needle. I like that it is quick, easy, and holds in two places but still allows me access to all edges for applique. As with everything I do, this is the stuff that I have found works for me. Just sharing a bit of my insanity to give folks ideas if they are stuck in a particular area.

I did it in person at a quilt show. I’m not sure how they do things online. I’m not sure what the style is called, but it has a Celtic-ish design on it with no gemstone. (Some have gemstones).

I got my thimble custom made from Thimbles by TJ. I don’t think they are in business anymore, but there are others that have stepped in to fill the void. It is made from sterling silver, and if the fit changes over the years, they will correct it or exchange for another to make it right. I love it bc it has dimples right at the angle of my finger where many others do not. Also it has lasted me at least 20 years at this point.

This was one of the first videos I filmed, so I would change a bunch of things if I did it now. I can tell you that I use the same technique in the other videos so you should be able to see it closer on one of the others. I just can’t think of a specific one of the about 200 videos on my channel. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

@PoolesPiecing
@PoolesPiecing 10 ай бұрын
Starching is a personal choice. Having said that, I do use Best Press when I iron my fabrics. I feel that it keeps them as flat as possible so they baste more accurately. There are some folks though who would never use starch for anything, so ultimately the choice is yours.

I’d rather use a dab of fabric glue than staples as staples can leave holes in fabric.
@PoolesPiecing
@PoolesPiecing Жыл бұрын
Completely understandable. I used glue a couple of times, but it didn’t hold reliably and it left goobers behind. I know you can get goobers out with water usually, but I would rather steam a staple hole than scrub my quilt with water. It’s all personal preference. I haven’t had any issues with staples for many, many blocks I have made at this point.

Thank you so much for this video. I started my Dear Jane about 3 years ago, worked on it for a while. Completed Row A and B, started row C, then life happened. Life became very busy and hectic so I put my Dear Jane is a container. It's been pack away for about a year. Prior to packing away the Paper Pieces I had glues the whole row C pieces to the fabric and left them until I recently started working on my pieces. Now, I'm having a hard time getting the paper pieces off of the fabric, they are stuck in place. I just finished ripping out C2 from the row I had stitched together because when I was trying to get the paper pieces out I poked right through the fabric, so now, I have a whole in the fabric. I am so so dishearted over having to rip out a whole block from the little bit I do have completed. Off I go to Michael's or somewhere to purchase a sewline glue pen and some refills. Your instruction on how to glue baste my piece is very healful. I almost sat here and cried when the tool I used, which was my own stupid fault because I was using a tiny pair of scissors, yep! dumb me. I should have known better. I thing I'll get one of those purple thangs while I'm out shopping. Wish I would have watched this video before hand. Thanks again for such an informative video. You're the best!! ! ! ! !

@PoolesPiecing Жыл бұрын
I am also shocked the colored thread didn’t work out, and I will be using the black mostly now. I will still use matching colored thread where there is color on both sides of the seam. A9 is a difficult block. If you’re becoming too frustrated, I would suggest leaving it and moving on to return to it later. You don’t want to pull your hair out! Once you have a few more blocks under your belt, you might see it with new eyes.

Using a flat, wood cuticle stick is a game changer on places like this. Slightly moistened (spit), the wood "grabs" the material and holds it as you push it in place and all but eliminates the fraying. I am a long-time student of Elly Sienkiewicz for applique and using these small sticks increased dramatically my success in these kinds of points.
