It’s lush sound and poetic visionary vocals just roll out of your stereo speakers. There are so many highs and cautionary lows throughout this masterpiece . We all wanted to move to where these visions took place......

Al Jardine wrote this (California Saga). He released a solo version featuring Crosby, Stills and Young (no Nash😔) on his solo album. Mike love contributed a poem he wrote called "Big Sur".

I like the fact that these albums are not that widely known keeping the magic for just those who can appreciate how great these songs are. The triple a Crown is Sunflower (the worst selling Beach Boy Album ever ) Holland and Surfs Up.......

I read somewhere this is actually 3 songs that had been being worked on and they were blended together by the band with the spoken word in the middle which if you follow it makes sense.....a very visual song......stunning masterpiece that Brian actually had nothing to do with....

Lyrics: verse 1: Prymaat, you are my conehead mate But Beldar we share this human state well beyond our own dimension not our designed intention Prymaat, your cone is shimmering in the light Beldar, I'll fly the senso-rings tonight Bridge: Don't want to hone my cone alone (You don't have to hone your cone alone) Could never hone my cone alone (You'll never have to hone your cone alone) Chorus: The senso-rings performing Oh the nature of things evolving The moons of Nipsar are glistening The planets of love are listening verse 2: I'll never understand this planet The way these humans love to ram it I much prefer the senso-rings and all the timeless joy they bring My conehead love is interstellar Oppenheimer, Edward Teller Our home on Remulack is distant my cone and all have low resistance (Repeat Bridge+Chorus) My cone is something serious transform you to delirious your senso-rings release all tension Transcending space and time dimension Eisenhower, Nixon, Truman None of them were really human ( Repeat bridge then chorus 2x) Grooooooooowl!!! Beldar I summon you Prymaat my chosen genetal mate Let us hone cones in our own home our homes, our zone, for each... other

The Beach Boys actually lived in Holland when they arranged this album. I had a co-worker who was stationed in the Air Force there. He could see them and their kids out side their house while he commuted to and from work. I was blown away when he told me that.

50 years ago last week (05-12-1973), Californ-I-A debuted in the Billboard Top-100 at #91. "Holland" is hands down my favorite BBoys album. And the messages & stories it contains are as relevant today as they were then, if not more so.

I can't believe how this well made comedy movie, with a great cast, story and even musicals still didn't make a lot of money as it shoud have. Maybe that's a proof that a movie doesn't need to break box office to be great and remembered. Ps: Prymaat actress is so beautiful.

Think it was so good that Landy wanted Brian to create something as good, hence Rio Grande. Holland is an album that The Beach Boys got so right. Fours tracks off it on the In Concert album which could easily have a fifth, the last section of this, which is a must at any concert.

I lived in Morro Bay for 33 yrs. Big Sur was my backyard. I count as friends families which have been 7 generations - mostly ranchers - in that area. I've walked, biked, hiked, hunted, surfed, sailed by, flown over the coast 'tween Monterey and Morro Bay. I've met people from all over the world visiting there. I've studied the geology and even met world class geophysicists who study that fractured ground. I've gained peace and gotten the good tidings of the land. Big Sur is one of the top ten places in the world. There live hippies descended from hippies who are low down thiefs. Many have built their homes from stolen material. Then there are the dropouts from society. Some have turned their backs to find a new way- like the former aeronautical engineer. Most are lifelong losers. There are good people but be ware, they are few among the crowd of infiltrators. Then there is the state which has outright stolen for themselves or destroted ancestral homes so they may have an uncluttered view. I cannot in good conscience live again in that state which has become so putrid in its corruption. Still, I am so homesick it hurts. Count yer blessings.

I know, it's so sad. The most beautiful state in the country, and rivals the beauty of almost anywhere in the world, but has been totally ruined by the powers that be and, frankly, a lot of the people! My father used to say, California would be so amazing if it wasn't for the people there. Still, I'm 66 and have dreamed of living in California my whole life but sadly never will now. 😢 Was born in San Fran but family moved when I was 4 or 5 so doesn't really count..

@lisadc4681 I guess you're a year older than myself. I would say for you to go. You not having lived there, your view would not be sullied by knowing what it once was. It would be fresh for you. There are still pockets of goodness. And the land and sea, lakes and rivers are still as beautiful as ever. If you could keep your head down, seek your own happiness, stay away from the idiocy, I think you could be alright at least for a short while. But no matter how you seek to explore and find new wonderments, the high prices and the sheer lunacy of oft fanatical socialist BS pervades like a contagion. So go, see for yourself the exquisite beauty. But know your time will be as a lengthy visit rather than feeling like being home. But that creates a bit of a problem. The place is so large and so spectacularly beautiful that even a lifetime is not enough.

The best album they ever did with some very strong environmental messages . It’s a beautiful album end to end and runs like a concept . It tells us about American history some of which many don’t want to hear , find that in trader , and it finishes with a hippie fest that we all love so much . I bought this just after it’s release after hearing at a friends place in London where I’m from . It’s nothing short of a masterpiece IMHO one of our favourites still in 2022 yet we are not big beach boys fans save surfs up another gem .

Cashmere hills filled with evergreens Flowin' from the clouds down to meet the sea With the granite cliff as a referee Crimson sunsets and golden dawns Mother deer with their newborn fawns Under Big Sur skies and that's where I belong. Big Sur I've got plans for you Me and mine are going to Add ourselves to your lengthy list of lovers And live in canyons covered with a springtime green While birds and flowers to be heard and seen And on my old guitar I'll make up songs to sing. Sparklin' springs from the mountainside Join the Big Sur river rushing to the tide Where my kids can search for sea shells at low tide. Big Sur my astrology it says that I am meant to be Where the rugged mountain meets the water And so while stars shine brightly and up above Fog rolls in through a redwood grove And to my dying fire, I think I'll add a log. _____________________________________________ An eagle's nest on the head of an old redwood on one of the precipice-footed ridges Above Ventana Creek, that jagged country which nothing but a fallen meteor will ever plow: no horseman Will ever ride there, no hunter cross this ridge but the winged ones, no one will steal the eggs from this fortress. The she-eagle is old, her mate was shot long ago, she is now mated with a son of hers. When lightning blasted her nest she built it again on the same tree, in the splinters of the thunder bolt. In a broken shack an old man takes his time about dyin' And just at the back a wild flowerbed that he'll lie in In dawn's new light a man might venture A horse drawn stage from Monterey. The she-eagle is older than I: she was here when the fires of eighty-five raged on these ridges, She was lately fledged and dared not hunt ahead of them, but ate scorched meat. The world has changed in her time; humanity has multiplied, But not here; men's hopes and thoughts and customs have changed, their powers are enlarged, their powers and their follies have become fantastic. Spilled down the hill a wagon load of bodies lay scattered, shipwrecked at sea. Limestone ore is all that mattered. They took it from the hills right through the cargo doors How many ships have come and gone at Thurso's landing shore? The unstable animal never has been changed so rapidly. The motor and the plane and the great war have gone over him, And Lenin has lived and Jehovah died: while the mother-eagle Hunts her same hills, crying the same beautiful and lonely cry And is never tired: dreams the same dreams, And hears at night the rock-slides rattle and thunder in the Throats of these living mountains. It is good for man To try all changes, progress and corruption, powers, peace and anguish, not to go down the dinosaur's way Until all his capacities have been explored: and it is good for him To know that his needs and nature are no more changed, in fact, in ten thousand years than the beaks of eagles. Of the eagle's plight, we know that nature's balance is undone. And it's the birthright of man to unify and live his life as one. A whisper of the word will let you soar with your soul. _____________________________ On my way to sunny California On my way to spend another sunny day Water, water Get yourself in the cool, clear, water The sun shines brightly down on Penny's place (The sun shines brightly down on the bay) The air's so clean it'll just take your mind away (Take your mind away, take your mind away) Have you ever been south of Monterey? Barrancas carve the coast line And the chaparral flows to the sea 'Neath waves of golden sunshine And have you ever been north of Morro Bay? The south coast plows the sea And the people there are of the breed They don't need electricity Water, water Cool cascades of clear, clear water The sun dance final scene sets the hills ablaze (Get yourself in that water) Horizon edges quick up the mountain's way (Up the mountain's way, up the mountain's way) Have you ever been down Salinas way Where Steinbeck found the valley? And he wrote about it the way it was in his travelin's with Charley And have you ever walked down through the sycamores Where the farmhouse used to be? There, the monarch's autumn journey ends On a windswept cypress tree Water, water (Get, get yourself in that) Get yourself in that cool, clear, water (Get yourself in that, get yourself in that water) The sun shines brightly down on Penny's place (Get yourself in that water) The air's so clean that it just takes your mind away (Take your mind away, take your mind away) And have you ever been to a festival The Big Sur congregation? Where Country Joe will do his show And he'll sing about liberty And the people there in the open air are one big family Yeah, the people there love to sing and share Their new found liberty
