I copy from reddit🙃 In the Golden Kingdom, the sound of the sunset boiling could scare children. The Buddha granted a great drum, and the drum’s sound could counteract the tide’s roar. So, the people of the Golden Kingdom revered the Buddha and applied gold leaf to his statues. However, the influence of Buddhism became so great that it threatened the ruling power, so the king ordered a ban on Buddhism and renamed the country to Sahālī. To punish this country, Bodhisattva Lingji sent his own mount, a giant insect with his power (head?). Every time the drum was beaten, the giant insect would appear and kill people. The Yellow Wind Sage gained sentience by stealing lamp oil in Ling Mountain and, fearing punishment, fled to this place. To protect the people and continue his own cultivation, he drove away the insect. This led the country to start worshiping yaoguais and rats. This further angered the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, who then turned the entire population into rats. The Yellow Wind Sage, realizing he had caused trouble, couldn’t solve the problem and left. In the eyes of the Bodhisattvas, those who do not revere the Buddha or understand the hierarchy (as Bodhisattva Lingji says in the end) must be punished. A country that stops believing in Buddha and instead worships a thieving rat - how could such a place not face destruction? In the animation, though the fox lives happily with humans, but it is ultimately a yaoguai by nature. The Yellow Wind Sage indeed eliminated the insect for the people, and later gave the Mountain God spirit Stone Essence, which were good. However, he caught the attention of the Bodhisattva, who kept a close watch on him. Later, in Journey to the West, he captured Tang Monk and Sun Wukong summoned Bodhisattva Lingji to subdue him. Throughout the story, his fear or hatred toward Bodhisattva Lingji and desires to continue his cultivation (which originally started from stealing oil) made him beheads the Bodhisattva to refine Sun Wukong’s treasure. None of these characters are purely good or evil.

Elder Jinchi burns Tang Monk, then Wukong borrow the Fire Proof Mantle from Virupaksa (3:26:35 mentioned about that part) *Virupaksa is the second giant dude from the left at 17:14 Mantle protects Tang Monk from burning while his kasaya got stolen by the Black Bear
