Say you're "the enemy" and an Osprey lands 50 yards away. You have a 50 cal. sniper rifle. What do you aim at? One of its proprotors, NOT one of its engines. If one of the Osprey's composite-fiber proprotors is shattered, the Osprey cannot take off. I hope I'm wrong.

I remember that plane with an identity crisis. When those cheese d*cks switched patches from the white knight hmt-204 to the raptors vmmt-204. Back in 06 I was across the hanger watching O-5s taking out the trash. Seriously top heavy squadron. Watched one of those 22s fuse a couple wires together during a routine turn up to check a gyro. Damn thing jumped off the deck with 3 lower enlisted inside. The flying toaster came crashing to the deck. Broke the starboard wing, made it look like a kickstand. The whole flight line was locked down. All the suits from R. Royce and Boeing made that $84 million dollar aircraft disappear. This was weeks before 263 "thunder chickens" stood up as the first MV combat squadron. And shipped to OIF. The sh*t you see when private interest writes the playbook would astound you. Theres literally no end to the jack@$$very played out withing the department of dumbsh*t under the guise of national security.

I still don't understand. If it is being lifted like a helicopter then the center of mass must be directly beneath the engines, but if it is in plane mode the lift from the horizontal stabilizer would move the center of lift behind the engines causing it to fall forward. I see the back of the wings folding down but I would think it has to be the front of the wings to counteract that.
@Justwantahover4 жыл бұрын
The wings are cranked forward, maybe that's got something to do with it. As you said the c of g has to be right on the center of the props. C of g can vary on planes (a little bit) by tweaking wings and tail plane size and angle etc.).
@brookelynn69644 жыл бұрын
The center of gravity does shift forward when it rolls down into airplane mode. Sufficient airspeed counteracts that by providing airflow to the wings for lift
@Krebzonide4 жыл бұрын
@@brookelynn6964 but if the lift is directly on the wings then it would be in the same spot as the lift from the engines in vtol mode, so how does that keep it straight if the center of gravity is moving forward?
@brookelynn69644 жыл бұрын
cheeseman it doesn’t move by much. The CG moves slightly forward so all that’s needed is a small correction on the cyclic stick
@leroyreynolds5472 Жыл бұрын
@@brookelynn6964 it actually moves about 12 inches forward as the nacelles transition from 90 degrees (vertical) to 0 degrees (horizontal). The large elevator helps counter the forward CG with downward force.

Yes, but since they are not single pilot certified, there has to be another rated pilot in the cockpit, unlike the UH-1H that often flew with one pilot and the crew chief in the left seat.

It's kind of sad that this amazing craft has such a bad reputation. Perhaps if it was deployed more slowly and painstakingly the deaths could have been prevented. The Osprey is a revolutionary craft bringing together many technologies for the first time. This clearly represents a risk. Taking risk had always been an inherent part of development of new craft. It just seems this one was pressed into service before it was ready.
