Depending on if you're a believer and/or admirer, I think thelastcamel's interpretation can be very personal. It's one of the most touching and interesting aspects of Christianity/ Judaism/ what have you. It seems like the speaker is having a direct and personal conversation with God. Very human, very personal. But this song is beautiful, however you interpret it. And I think that's the most important thing. It doesn't really matter what it was written to mean, it's how listeners perceive it.

The speaker in this song is a persecuted Christian during the times of the Roman Empire. He is last in a literal queue of Christians being fed to the lions in a coliseum. Every time the speaker says "You" he is talking to God. The rain in the story serves as a symbol of God's lamentation, or tears: "I know you're thinking of me 'cause it's just about to rain." I am a nonbeliever, but this song is certainly one of the most starkly powerful descriptions of faith that I have ever heard.
