Do you really need this if your doing positive silicone pieces. Usually the spray is if your continually casting a silicone molds.

After you spray it on and let it dry for the given time, do you need to rinse it with water or wipe it down with a wet cloth tp get the excess off?

Hi Toby and thank you for making this excellent video. I have an old silicone mold I am trying to extend the life of. I am casting concrete with it and was wondering if you would recommend using Smooth-On Universal Mold Release before each casting? Thank you again.

Thanks for this video, my professor told us we were gonna need these for our sculptures and then didn't actually explain what exactly they were until the day we needed them in class, let alone how to make one. Got a little heads up.

Old resin shouldn't be used in production casting. However, to get a little more life out of my old resin, I put it in my vacuum chamber. Vacuum each part before mixing for better results.

Hey there! So usually I will wipe off the excess silicone (as much as I can) and then get a cup of 99% rubbing alcohol and then give it a good scrubbing with my fingers to try and remove the silicone. Keep in mind that one will not get all the silicone out and the bristles will have a slight “stiffness” to them but it’s good enough to get several more uses before I finally have to throw it away-hope this helps!

Awesome ...I had a thought after watching the first video when you made the original mold ... any reason why you can't put the mold back into an identical plastic cup rather than use rubber bands to hold together for your casting ? I'm thinking it would be applying 100% inward pressure.

Did you put the Sculpey firm through a pasta machine before working with it? Or did you just use a roller? I bought some Sculpey firm recently and it's so difficult to make it pliable with my hands.

Hey there! So I didn’t run it through a pasta machine as I have pretty strong hands and I just knees it in smaller pieces although a pasta machine isn’t a bad idea:)

Given how long ago this video was posted you likely know this already, but RICE is a great way to figure out how much silicone to use. Simply dump the rice into molding space and then pour out the rice into a measuring cup... voila!

I have a question.. I can't seem to find the answer anywhere online.. I have been using smooth on's smooth cast 300 (fast setting) and for a while now the A side lid is extremely difficult to open, and when I do I see crystals built up around the rim. also I noticed some creeping out the lid. moody of the time I can still cast but least thing I cast never dried on the surface. do you know what this is? I assume the chemicals are separating and the part A is not chemically correct anymore. (probably òld I know..)
@Tobywaynestudios
@Tobywaynestudios 3 жыл бұрын
Ok! So I have experienced all of what you have told me and this is what I do! The crystals forming on side “A” is the resin getting air inside the container and drying out which is making the lid VERY difficult to open. The habit I have gotten into is every time I use my resins, I wipe the excess resin that leaks down the bottle and around the rim with a clean paper towel-one paper towel for side A and a clean one for side B (that way there is no way the chemicals can mix and fire off) This has helped me with the crystals. The resin that has the surface that doesn’t dry is also know as leeching which the most common reason this happens is the resins haven’t been mixed well enough. I always pour the two sides together and stirs like crazy to really make sure they are mixed and then pour the resin into a second cup and with a NEW stir stick, mix it again. Leeching is a painus in the anus, but I have found that if does happen, I take a clean paper towel and apply 99% rubbing alcohol and then hit the areas that are leeching-I give it a good gentle scrub and let it dry out. That should get rid of the leeching spots-if not, try it again. I know this is a LOT of info so thank you for hanging in there with me!

Don't use this to fill in a mold that has Oomoo in it, it will make a mess. Mold star stays with mold star, oomoo with oomoo.

Use computer air duster to hit the top of all your resin buckets and containers before you put the tops back on them. The R134a that's in them is much heavier then air and will displace the air and moisture. This will help your resins performance as it ages. You have to replace the gas blanket every time you pull any product though.

Hi, Great video. But I have one question. How does the smooth cast 320 feel? Because I want to make high quality statues. So would you say it feels like plastic, or can you feel the quality? And I don’t know if you can answer the question, but is it easy to paint the mold? Like with airbrush or brushes. Or do you have to prepare it?

Mold Star 16 is a platinum-cure silicone. Paper cups, wooden sticks, and Sculpey brand clay all contain sulfur, which is a No-No! They will all affect the curing. Do not use any products with sulfur in them.
