I have a question. What medium do you use initially? Looking at the video, I thought the first layer of wood was pretty wet and would be difficult to paint over.

It was just solvent and, yes, it was a mistake. 🤦‍♂️ I don’t recommend it.

I'm a Yank who moved to Australia after Vietnam (2/502 Inf, 101st Airborne) to work as an art teacher... An Australian brought me the cross cut saw about 6 feet long from the turn of the 20th century and asked me to airbrush this "Outback" drover scene. I said instead let me spray a clear urethane coat to seal it and you can sell it for about 2 and 1/2 grand ... I re-drew the saw in "Corel Draw" and took the new image to a "laser cut company" I have done some work with. They made a thin blade and 2 half thickness handles made so he could mount it to his wall flat. I used to teach decorative finishes, so I created a rusty blade and distressed handles with his mural added...everybody was happy... nice post...

Thank you Andy. I know the amount of fuss producing any video can be, let alone achieving a successful painting process in front of cameras. Thank you for taking the bother and sharing the result. I admire the clarity of your process. As I watched I could feel myself wanting to jump forward and add more detail. Your well-practiced restraint was a very good lesson. Fortunately I don't live in Portugal but in Perth and will get to come along to one of your workshops in August. :) Looking forward to meeting & learning from you then.

Tonal shapes and values is what beginners often overlook in trying to get a first impression. Yet that first impression doesn't arise from applying a multitude of colours which in the course of the painting leads to uncertainty and frustration. Seasoned artists like Andy seem to be well aware of that. Thumbs up!

hope you don't mind me being honest, but I think I preferred the original with highlights - it just seemed fresher (more honest? ) somehow, and matched the bright foreground (to me anyway:) The latter dimmed tree kind of feels out of place with the vibrant grasses lower right . Again - hope you don't mind me sticking my virtual oar in - it's a superb painting either way.

Those are the most profound words I have ever heard from a painting tutorial here in youtube. Working on the foundation and principles, brands of materials are not as relevant, let the colors take care of itself. This is freeing!

You could have stopped at the 4 minute mark and had a good painting because of the values and depth you had established. It's like the old saying of a poor craftsman blaming his tools- more colors won't fix a bad start.

Man that challenge of following along with a different, limited palette was perfect for me. I've been stuck in the idea of learning values for a while, and I'd have trouble tracking brightness across colors, thinking I just had to get better. But following your suggestion made me realize I was too obsessed with matching the individual colors to the source, so being forced to say "this is the only way I can go darker" and then see the harmony of it working at the end has been probably the most significant breakthrough for my ability to paint. I'm actually producing pieces now that look like paintings I would want to look at myself!

Would you mind sharing what brushes you use? I have been trying to lighten my paintings-they end up so dark- so I am going to play this again and follow step-by-step. Thank you!!
@AndyDolphinArtist

I use different brushes all the time. Sometimes expensive bristle brushes, sometimes cheap bristles and sometimes flat synthetic. Brushes are not that important. Learn to control the tones first, before worrying too much about the type of brush.
