I watched a video from Alex (Fishstory) about the prevalence ( or lack there of) of betacarotene in wild betta diets and that the colour red was correlated to increased aggression due to resource guarding behavior. Basically the toughest betta fish would have all the beta-carotene and those fosh would end up showing bright reds and orange hues as a sexual signifier,
@TheDave3337 сағат бұрын
In many fish species the colors red or pink will heighten when the fish get ready to spawn. Flamingoes do the same thing when getting ready to mate. Generally, the more red you have the healthier you are because it indicates that you've been eating well. Vertebrates can't produce their own Betacarotene, so it must be obtained by eating lots of food. So, the more red you have, the better of a parent you will be. This trend is common in many species. Red shows up as a sign of good health. And since the male betta does all the fry rearing, he needs to be healthy and well-fed.

You're right, did I say 2-3 months? I guess it really depends on how close you're able to look. It's the females that are easiest to spot. But guppy strains that have females with color make the job of sexing them much more difficult.

If you ever see people who raise f1 type bass for stocking reason they hand feed them shad and other food and the bass know who they are and learn to move in on people feeding them in the grow ponds, the main stock bass are like wild pets who love the attention. Bass are a 100% underappreciated fish.
@TheDave3333 күн бұрын
I agree! Captive raised animals end up being like puppy dogs who beg for food. I've seen the same thing from captive bred pheasants, who have learned to trust humans. The pheasants are stocked for hunting, but they're so tame, it really takes the challenge out of the hunt.

Spat out saliva as nest building material (foam saliva), eh cultural differences among species 😆. One species choose another, chichlid -like way of raising their youngs. It's chocolate gourami. During spawning female lays eggs to the ground , male fertilize them, then female pick up them to her mouth where incubation begins. After 2 weeks (average time, may vary) young fishes leave their mum's mouth. From now they are able to live by themselves.

Sorry for your loss. Motherhood is difficult. Pregnant female guppies are easily stressed to the point of illness. Avoid using breeder boxes, a 5 gallon bucket or even a 2.5 gallon bucket would be better. If at all possible, try to keep the mother guppy in one place it's less stressful. Don't give up, keep trying, keep learning. <•))))~{
