Hello fellow Garden City Kansans! I’m a south Texas that spent every single summer as a kid in Garden City Kansas. All the way back when the big pool was only a buck to get in and the library where I read my first Harry Potter book. 😂🔥 Who ever is seeing this I hope your doing well and if you could give me any update on how A street is going that would be nice. My grandparents lived on A street for 30 years. I hope to go back to visit this next year

I was a metro cop for 39 years senior corporal, I retired 3 years ago, however I always wanted to be a fireman. My father was a metro cop, grandfather, brothers, even all my first cousins, however I would always help firefighters while on duty because of the tremendous respect I noticed from my colleagues in law enforcement. I once got 14 days without pay, while working mids, a house was on fire, I called it in , however I was able to bring out 4 toddlers & the mother, went back in until I almost passed out. They finally told me their father had died a year prior. We were all trained at the academy not to interfere with the firefighters, that we are not firefighters & we should not try to attempt to go into burning buildings. At any rate I paid dearly for that, but the fire Chief gave me a commendation via police metro H/Q. I never learned my lesson cause 2 years later I jumped into a river with a lady & 2 kids, I could only save the mother & 1 child, my new Motorola portable didn’t work & H/Q charged me $3600 for the portable & I got 7 days without pay. Yet it bothers me to this day that perhaps I could have saved both children if I had a pocketknife to cut seatbelts. Fire fighters are truly America’s HEROES.

The unjust act at City Hall. My Mother and Father taught me that life is not always fair and that sometimes people will treat you unfairly and unjustly just because they believe they are better than you. They told me sometimes it's best to walk away and say nothing when things happen. However, they also taught me that there will be times when you must stand for what is right; when a wrong has occurred, you do your best to correct the unjust act. This week, I saw such an unjust act occur at City Hall. Tuesday, January 2nd, was the day that The Garden City Commission held its first Commission meeting of the year. It is also the beginning of when the newly elected commissioners take their seats at the commission table. This meeting is also when their fellow commissioners select the new mayor and vice-mayor. Since 1980, the city commission has had a 44-year tradition that the person with the highest votes in their election would become the vice-mayor and the following year would become mayor. In the city's November 2023 election, the top vote-getter was Mr. Tom Nguyen, who received 1,705 total votes. He beat the second-place finisher by almost 500 votes. His campaign committee, family, and friends were excited about his accomplishments. Several past city commissioners and mayors expressed the tradition of believing he would be selected as vice-mayor at the January commission meeting. At the meeting, here is what happened: when it was time to make a motion to select a vice-mayor, Commissioner Unruh made the motion to elect Commissioner Roy Cessna to become the vice-mayor; that motion was quickly seconded, and no discussion was held. The meeting was adjourned for refreshments and pictures across the city chambers; I went up to commission Unruh and asked why they did not go by the 44-year tradition that Tom was the top vote-getter and should have been selected as vice mayor. Commission Unruh stated he didn't know about the tradition. I asked him how could he not know every past vice mayor and mayor he had served with followed that tradition; he kept telling me he was sorry. I told him not to say sorry to me; say sorry to Tom. I also spoke to Commissioner Cessna and asked him the same question. His response was what did I want him to do? He said; there was a motion and a second to appoint him vice-mayor. My answer to him was he could have been a man and done the right thing, saying; “Hey, I have been the Mayor three times and vice-mayor three times. This will make a fourth time; let's follow tradition and select Tom as vice-mayor; he was the top vote-getter”. Neither Commissioner Unruh nor Cessna could give me a reason why they did not follow the 44-year tradition. I feel there has been an unjust and unkind act toward Tom. I will tell you firsthand how hard Tom worked to win this commission seat; his campaign never spoke unkindly about any commissioner. He ran to have a seat at the commission table to represent our diverse community, hoping that others would follow his commitment and love of serving others. My heart is heavy that I would witness such an unkind, unjust act by people representing our current city council. I also understand why more minorities never feel they have a chance to serve in public office. This year, I'll pray that when the time comes to elect our next Mayor of Garden City, the commission will do the right thing and appoint Tom Nguyen to represent us all. Will you please join me in that prayer? Hope, Faith, and God’s Love Tim Cruz
