It's four in the morning, the end of December I'm writing you now just to see if you're better New York is cold, but I like where I'm living There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert You're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair She said that you gave it to her That night that you planned to go clear Did you ever go clear? Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder You'd been to the station to meet every train, and You came home without Lili Marlene And you treated my woman to a flake of your life And when she came back she was nobody's wife Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth One more thin gypsy thief Well, I see Jane's awake She sends her regards And what can I tell you my brother, my killer What can I possibly say? I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you I'm glad you stood in my way If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me Well, your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes I thought it was there for good so I never tried And Jane came by with a lock of your hair She said that you gave it to her That night that you planned to go clear Sincerely, L Cohen

I came back to this cover again this morning, more as a dedicated fan of Aurora, than Mr. Cohen, but please do not mistake me; all respect and admiration to him. But Aurora is such a gifted vocal artist. I am eternally captivated by the way she falls into a sort of hypnotic state in every song she performs, whether it is one of her own compositions, or a cover of another's work. The spell breaks for only moments between songs, and then she falls, yet again, into the dreamworld she creates for us with her amazing voice as she plays her games with tone, pitch, cadence, rhythm, and more. This performance in particulr; every time I listen to it, I begin to cry around two thirds of the way through it. Wonderful tears.

this is one of those 'artists' in your school of arts who takes themselves so seriously you want to punch yourself in the balls i remember these kids, always talking, never saying anything, table full of echo chambers check out the cover by Hayden, he actually understands this song and plays a piano (p.s. cohen hated this song personally)

I like her but I cannot standdddddd when the singers mime like touching her hair when singing about a lock of hair or if they sing something about thinking they point to their heads. So forced, inauthentic, corny. It ruins the performance….her hand movements lack any authenticity. I can’t look.

Horrible. Don't EVER try to cover this song without the guitar melody. The guitar melody is the essence of the song. It didn't kick in till half way through, like it wasn't important. Terrible.

You may think of this song as a religious song in principle, but in fact, it may be the opposite. In that sense, it may be a reproduction that captures the core of this song.

This song, like so many L Cohen songs, makes me cry, not sure why. The inherent loneliness of being a human, I guess. Ethereal and earthy at the same time. Aloof and intimate. Resentful, kind…all there.
