Hi, Lahaul valley is really very beautiful and so many tourists visit there every year, but most of them are bikers or SUV travelers who are descending from Ladakh, because this valley is on the highway from Leh (Ladakh) to Manali. I had this golden chance to see Lahaul valley in May last year when with a group of friends, I was coming back from Leh. Let me also tell you that this road is considered as one of "the most dangerous roads on Earth" by National Geographic Society and they've included it in their series of documentaries on same subject. From Leh, we started early in morning and soon climbed up to 17835 ft. high Tanglang la pass and then reached a 55 kms long flat plateau. Running our jeep on straight road was a delight but there oxygen is very less and terrain is totally desert. Then came another pass Baralacha la and another and another. They were horrific as road was so narrow and on one side were 1000 to 1300 ft. deep gorges.... Believe me "Kaleja muh ko aa jata hai".... This whole patch of Leh to Keylong is 380 kms., so by 4 pm we all were exhausted and praying to Hanuman ji (our God) to please give us courage to get along with this road. At Pang (a stop over) about 1:40 pm, we had got a good meal of "Daal-Chawal" and tea in a camp set up by Indian Army and we were so thankful to them. Because all this road is so much cold desert that there is no village or hotel where you get even water. After Pang we had started again and crossed another high pass of 17600 ft. then the road started descending. From highest point we could count 21 hair-pin loops of road going down. So many water crossings were on the way as snow was melting fast then. It was so dangerous to drive on those slopes, we had to cross our fingers and pray to God all the way. But there were also moments of smile when we crossed those streams. Their names are so funny-- first comes "Whiskey Nalaa"... then comes "Rum Nalaa"... then comes "Soda Nalaa". We now were guessing what will be next name Gin or Champaign?.... But next name came "Neat Nalaa"... ha..ha... Actually these all highways are built up by a branch of Indian Army known as Border Road Organisation (BRO) so may be in such isolated and dangerous terrain they must've thought of cheering up all travelers. Well, it did. After descending first stop came as Sarchu where Ladakh ends and Himachal starts. Here we get good doze of oxygen and good tea as well. After Sarchu the road enters into this Lahaul valley and we drove for 60 kms to reach Keylong for night stay. We had to cross Darcha bridge which is longest in this area and on the way we saw Zispa lake also which receives all the water from melting snow above. From there the tree line also starts as road comes below 10000 ft. We could reach Keylong by 8:30 pm and got very nice hotel there. Next morning we found so nice forest all around our hotel and high snow packed peaks behind them. We also visited Sissu water falls and then crossed Atal tunnel which is 12.4 kms long at this high altitude. After coming out we were in Solang valley where we could enjoy our lunch and para-gliding also then after 12 kms, we reached Manali the biggest town and tourist destination.
