Quite good until final minute. The Russian soldier is clearly a romantic, and perhaps a writer, given his letters to his girlfriend. Yet he reacts so dispassionately to the young German soldier’s death, even smiling at one point. Didn’t ring true at all.

A interesting story about the Roman legion. Now before anyone says anything about the legendary discipline of the Romans ("what have they ever done for us?") I will point out that Attila's armies swept in from the east into the Eastern Roman Empire driving all before them that significantly weakened them and the Italian invasion. Let's be fair, at this point in the early AD 400's the Roman Empire was divided in two and most of their armed forces were auxiliaries sworn to warlords and the famed discipline that ironically stretched their Empire to the breaking point was not a thing anymore Ok, here's a good fight for all you history buffs- Atilla in his prime versus Caesar in his prime....?

@Sequatchiemm My Uncle Jim was in infantry in Korea and was wounded. One time he saw an enemy soldier hide behind a bush. He loaded all tracer rounds in his rifle. Started firing at the top of the bush and worked his way down. I saw him shoot a shotgun slug and hit a 8 inch circle on the second shot. The first shot was an inch and a half high.

Such small numbers to be in a trench. I know it’s a short story and budget might not be high. But when there’s 5 men to an army they just don’t work as a proper war story.

I have questions about the plot. Were the coordinates given to artillery correct? Why were his comrades dead? Artillery? The Huns? What was the meaning of the ghostly German soldier at the end?
@MendelFilms
@MendelFilms 6 ай бұрын
I wanted to leave it ambiguous and open to interpretation whether the coordinates were correct and if it was what killed his friends or if it was the Germans. After MacDonald is hit by the artillery shell, everything after that is actually after he is dead. The ghostly German is Death/The Grim Reaper accepting him into the afterlife. I had the story told about the Huns earlier in the film foreshadow the ending.

Do you have any tips for a young teen who wants to start filming short war films, specifically ww2? This film is perfect and I would like to know what led you to perfecting it.
@MendelFilms
@MendelFilms 10 ай бұрын
Thank you I appreciate that. This took about two years of pre production development and planning. Theres tons of short war films on youtube, and when I went in making this, I said to myself that I wanted it to stand out and be something special. It is understandable that having a low budget means that there is only so much you can do with a war film, but you have to be creative and find ways to make your story compelling and stand out. 99% of short war films on here are basically a couple of guys out in the woods, a lot of them being about an allied soldier running into an enemy soldier and the two find some sort of humanity together. I suggest not doing that. Its overdone and they are a dime a dozen. I raised the budget for this film through crowdfunding and made a budget that I thought would be enough to make something realistic and on a bigger scale. I suggest you do the same. But you can also be creative with spending money. Befriend reenactment groups and they have their own kits and weapons that can lower your budget significantly by you using them and their stuff instead of buying or renting it yourself. Good luck.
@themilitariacollector9449
@themilitariacollector9449 10 ай бұрын
@@MendelFilms Wow, that helps a lot. I do see a lot of films on here that focus on the same plot, that being very generic stories about an american walking in a forest. It will take a lot, but I could definitely try to do something more large scale. I currently finished assembling my ww2 us army kit so I already am kinda getting there. I have tried planning out my film several times, and I think that I don't want to show the German forces in it, to build suspense. Do you think this is a good idea? I think it is overdone to show the Germans so much, and so I am trying to make it a bit more intense if you don't really see them but know they are near. Thank you so much for the advice. I have also tried collaborating with my friend, but it is really only me and him who collect gear. I will try to find people who share the same interest. Thank you.

My great grandfather was a German stormtrooper, (sturmtrupen). When he was given his new helmet, (stahlhelm, after the picklehauble,) a French bullet hit him right in the forehead. That helmet saved his life. It’s disgusting the way people look at him. He was a hero. Not all Germans were evil. RIP Heinrich Agnew III

Well done guys. This shows just how terrible WW1 was. The USA joined late in the war (1917) but still lost over 100 thousand men. Australia was in the thick of it from 1915 until the end and we lost 61 thousand so it shows that the USA was thrust right into the big battles when they arrived. For all the yanks out there, if you have not seen a movie called the Lost battalion, you must see it. You will be proud of your soldiers. Really enjoyed this short film.

My grandfather fought with Company M, 16th Infantry, 1st Division in two major offensives - Meuse Argonne and St Mihiel, was wounded was twice and cited for gallant conduct with a Silver Starts, two Purple Hearts and good conduct medal. He was most proud of the good conduct medal as it was the hardest to earn. He received his American citizenship as a WWI veteran and worked in WV coal mines for the next 40 yrs. His Italian work ethic produced nine successful children who all lived the American dream. I’m his oldest grandson, retired Lt Colonel, proud of our family service. RiP grandad.
