That's a cool idea., but when the linen is painted you'll have to stow them somehow, so you're back to a carrier for panels.

I used to grind some black iron oxide (oxide black) into the bone black to make it dry faster. Just 10 % makes a big difference. Manganese black is even better, if you can find it. And yes, add a bit of thick oil to counter sinking in.

Caveat: Just because the label says "cassel earth" doesn't mean all brands are selling the same product or exact color. Cassel earth was originally made from unstable materials such as peat and asphaltum, nowadays it is usually made of some iron oxide (a brown ochre). Some tube paint manufacturers make it with transparent synthetic pigments, very good for glazing but slower drying, though most use fast drying and more opaque iron oxides.
@samuel.s.hoskins4 күн бұрын
I have found that with all companies except for Natural Pigment. I good way to check is to see what is in a company's Naples Yellow... it is almost always a mix of titanium white and cadmium yellow. Also, any brand that has certain colors with the name Geniune before is just a good indicator that they have a lot of paints that aren't.

Does Black Oil darken? I bought some from a maker and noticed a darkening effect , but I also mixed in a Copal varnish they make as well. This was 8 months after noticing my painting in the dark. Just nervous it will darken. I like to get my whites and colors as pure looking as possible, but I have to say I love the lead mediums and lead white. But not sure your experience noticing any darkening or if you know?
@ganapatikitty2 ай бұрын
Oh wait, the medium I have is similar to Black oil, lead, manganese, and linseed oil. Maybe the manganese darkened?

Hi Samuel, this was super helpful. Thank you. Could you explain what you do with your loose linen when you get home? Do you glue them flat to a panel or stretch them on stretcher bars? Or are they just for research and you don't prepare them for framing?

So you use black oil to make paint, or in mediums or both? I saw a series of photos of a guy using black oil as a glaze medium on a painting in the maxfield parrish style. Pretty impressive. Next week I’m going to try the glazing with rublev’s black oil.

Hi Samuel, a wonderful and informative video, thank you. Did you have any issues getting your art supplies through the TSA check points? I've heard accounts of art supplies; paints, mediums, brushes, etc., not allowed to board, and forced to be left behind for both international and domestic flights.
@samuel.s.hoskins5 ай бұрын
I pack everything except for the loose linen in my checked luggage and have not had any problems.
@prolificF85 ай бұрын
I have traveled both domestic and to several countries abroad (Rome, Portugal, Greece) with 40ml and smaller sized paint tubes, long handle brushes (many sizes and shapes), a small holbein palette knife, a tiny bit of oil and have never had anyone confiscate my materials. I print out a sheet that you can google for TSA that has info about vegetable-based artist colors (never call them paints) and their flashpoints. I take them as carry on (not checked in). I am travelling for the first time with my plein air gear to Paris and am more concerned about the weight limits on Air France which is 26.4 lbs total (suitcase and personal item) for economy seats. I've heard they're strict flying out of Paris.

Glad I met you at the Bellevue Art Fair today. 😊 I’ve worked w/ consciousness in various ways for years & knew I needed to connect after seeing your YT channel. I’ve known Ken Wilbur since I lived in Boulder in the early 2000’s and am now finishing my PhD at CIIS, which was founded by Haridas Chaudhry, a student of Sri Arubindo & the Mother, the first scholars of Integral Yoga. I studied w/ Alan Leslie Combs @ CIIS, a leading consciousness scholar. My thesis is in compassionate technology since I’ve worked w/ AGI in the past & am working to bring technology back to a humanistic basis. Glad to cross paths, definitely was led to connect.

did you use vinegar or actual acetic acid, I bought acetic acid.. also, howmuch did you treat the lead with acetone?
@samuel.s.hoskins6 ай бұрын
I used acetic acid and diluted it a bit with water. I have heard that vinegar works fine as well. For the acetone, I didn't measure. I just applied some to the rough end of a sponge and scrubbed it a bit and that seemed to work fine.

I do and use a cooked oil too but never tried with litharge, instead i use calcium sulfate and bone ash, but before mixed the minerals with the oil i crush them using a mortar and a pestle, the minerals need to be very fine almost like smoke, otherwise the resulting oil its not so satisfactory. You should try to get a mortar and a pestle to crush your pigments, there are a very cheap ones made of hard plastic, that can do the job.
@phillipschmidtpottery6 ай бұрын
I love it! Thanks for documenting your process! If I were you, I would invest in a much better mask, a true respirator. They’re only $15 for the p100 3m ones.
