my mother in lw used to go there Monday to Friday, in the 1990s, she loved it and it certainly looked after its clients very well

this is great, thank you Richard. I grew up in Hucclecote and Barnwood House was very much part of the landscape.

Thank you for the video. I boarded here for a few years while I was at Selwyn. Memories.

There is a thread on the Selwyn School Facebook site of comments by boarders. You might like to read it.

@@richardauckland4191 yes, thank you, I saw it the other day. It is how I ended up seeing your video. I'm in the group picture taken by the columns in the thread! It really has been a trip down memory lane. It's good to know the place has been remembered.

Can you remember when this picture was taken? I know that this selwyn offshoot was closed a few years before the school closed. Also, do you know what happened to the Forrest family?

@@richardauckland4191 Hi Richard, it's difficult to be precise after so long, but I would say that picture was probably taken some time around 79 or 80. I became a day girl before leaving Selwyn in 82ish, so I don't know what became of the Forrest's after that. I do recall Mrs Forrest's brother lived upstairs at Barnwood, Mr Parrott.

@@hervana22 79, 80 that's useful, Parrot! thank you! that might help me to sort out the family. That also explains a comment " they had boarders upstairs" it was not boarders but family

Thank you for the video as I remembered it when there as a child and wondered what happened over the years.

I am glad you enjoyed it. How much do you remember of the building? Do you have any memories or photos you can share? There is a book on the hospital, written by me, that is available through amazon.

Why did Wotton Pitch become 'unsavoury'?
@richardauckland4191
@richardauckland4191 2 жыл бұрын
As far as I can tell, the only bit of Wotton Pitch that became unsavoury was the lane that ran down the Hill, behind the houses, from Horton Road to Armscroft Gardens. The council made a closure order, maybe around 1960, though I am not with my records at present, so I cannot confirm the date. If I recall correctly, this overgrown part of the lane that runs from Barnwood to the centre of Gloucester, which at that point is known today as Royal Well Lane, may well have peen where undesirable activities took place. There is a file about this in the Gloucester Records Office

@@richardauckland4191 Many thanks. My old stomping ground. I was dragged-up in Grosvenor Road (the posh bit, born 1950) and had a schoolfriend whose house backed onto Royal Well Lane. Used to go to the ice cream factory along that lane. Oh well, this was later than the 'unsavoury' period, so missed out again :o)

Thank you, that's very kind of you to say so, Well, today I have been editing the auto subtitles for the BHH and Manor Videos, so they read sensibly. I will tackle this and its sister later. I also have a part 3 which needs editing before it goes live. There is much more i could do... What would you like to see?

Any local history around Barnwood, where we live now and Hucclecote where we lived for 38 years! I am the guy who brought a piece of tram track to one of tour lectures, which was pulled out of Barnwood Road when they laid a new sewer in the late 80s! LOVE the before and after photographs😀 I have a superb colour slide of the Walls Ice Cream trike man.....he posed for me at the junction of Barnwood Ave and Road if you were ever in need of it!

Brian and I are discussing another talk, possibly for the autumn. If you would be kind enough to let me copy of your slide of the ice cream man that would be great as our old image always got an appreciative response when we used it A better one would be good.. Yes I remember you. Fascinating conversation

I have dug out the colour slide taken in 1978......excellent quality!! That year Walls repainted his trike to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the coronation with a splendid royal crest on the front. You are most welcome to borrow it to have it scanned....regret I cannot help with that! Best we do not exchange mobile nos or addresses on this site, but we could meet somewhere in Barnwood to do the hand over Richard? Pete
