@BoatMotors20 күн бұрын
It could be many things...Start with a compression test and tell me the numbers. Do the test correctly leave the choke in the OFF/OPEN position, switch to forward gear and turn the throttle handle to fast. Both spark plugs must be removed during the test.

I'm going to inherit the most Rare Johnson 3HP Outboard Motor. It's been in the family for 3 Generations. I remember 40 Years ago, when fisherman used to pull up & give offers to buy it on the spot. My Dad would ask: "Why would you want this so badly?". "Because it's the perfect size motor to put on a larger vessel for Troll Fishing.

My Dad purchased one of the Evinrude Boats. The Sweet 16. Well made and very Stable. Had a V4 90 Evinrude on it, which had a Prop on it that was smaller in Dia, than the Props on the 40hp, and used almost no gear reduction(23:20) in the lower unit, weird Design.

I have a 2011 E-Tec 150 I ran out of fuel while out boating a few months back Since then having issues with fuel not being sent over to fuel pump unless I manually pump the primer bulb to keep the engine from dying. Had to pump it all the way back to the ramp to keep it from stalling Replaced all fuel line to outboard, new primer bulb, new pickup tube, new water separator kit, has a 3 month old fuel lift pump and a 4 month old OEM VST and fuel pump, I can hear the fuel pump running when I turn key… made sure all lines are air tight secured, lift pump is priming fuel pump.. runs on idle for 30 mins then dies.. I give it gas then will shut off after 30 seconds. Put a clear line coming out of the tank to see if picking up fuel. At random it will start working and can see the fuel being sent to the outboard but once I shut off and try again it will go back to not sending fuel at all out of the tank to outboard. Plz help Thinking of opening fuel pump and make sure VST might not be clogged up or something It did have some really old fuel line (grey line) Heard lots of issues with those Thanks for reading!
@BoatMotorsАй бұрын
This sounds like a big mystery. The E-Tec 150 is a very capricious outboard motor...Is the tank you are using removable or stationary build in the boat?
@SkiffFishingАй бұрын
it’s removable.. forgot to mention.. hooked up an external 3 gallon tank and still not pickup up fuel… yeah tell me , I’ve heard the stories of E-Tecs… I do want to mention my injectors are dirty if I leave on idle for 15 mins it will foul 4 injectors .. but it was working perfectly fine with this issues as long as I’m throttling it won’t foul Haven’t gotten time to send them to be cleaned out professionally yet Had it running still that way for a good 2 months with no troubles

@@SkiffFishing Can you attach a fuel vacuum gauge to the fuel line to see for any suction?
@SkiffFishingАй бұрын
@@BoatMotors I’m sure I can, do I attach it after fuel pump?
@BoatMotorsАй бұрын
@@SkiffFishing The gauge should work in two modes: vacuum and pressure. First, do a test before the pump and then after the pump.

Thanks for the history lesson. Sure brought back some great memories of the old Mercs. My first encounter was dad buying a used 40 hp. What a horrible motor. We were of the opinion that it had spent some time on the bottom of the lake. Much to our extreme surprise, dad came home one day in 1959 and announced that he had traded it in on a brand new 40. Much to my surprise, this turned out to be a great motor. We ran it for 10 years or so, and then my cousin bought it and ran it another 10. My first encounter with the 6 cyl engine was in the mid 60's. Dad had a 2nd cottage that he rented to a guy that had a large cedar strip boat with not one but two on the transom. The nickname we had for them in our area was "dock crasher" which was very appropriate. I drove it many times towing water skiers. Imagine coming into a dock, having to shut down both engines and restart them in reverse to stop. It took a lot of practice to say the least. I have many otjher stories of those wonderful old engines from back in my youth.

@BoatMotorsАй бұрын
Was the engine running when this happened? If it was working, it could be that the engine is hydrolocked and bent the piston rod. For now unscrew the spark plugs and ventilate the engine.It is very important that no water remains in the engine because it will rust. Then try to start it. If it works then everything is fine, if not it will need to be repaired...

This did bring back a lot of memories of the boat and Mercury motor that I grew up with , my dad's 1958 14 ft mahogany Borum Speedicraft runabout with a Merc 500 ,4 cyl, 50 HP ob.. it was a very fast boat for back then.... many years later when I bought my first boat, which was a 1964 25 FT Cruisers Inc. Cuddy powered buy a 70s vintage Mercruiser 215 E inboard outboard .. that was a Ford 302 V8 that had a huge HD outdrive with electric shift.... eventually I had to get rid of it because I couldn't get the outdrive rebuilt because they discontinued most of the internal parts..... currently I own a 1988 PowerPlay XLT 185 with a Merc Magnum V8 with an alpha outdrive that's still runs flawlessly. So I guess you could say I'm an old Merc gal...lol
