Interestingly, I found that the finger style sound of the Labella's at 100% on the tone knob sounded like a louder variation of the picked sound you got out of the Fender strings.
@stephenboutwell101228 күн бұрын
Nice catch! I think the LaBella’s have a more pronounced midrange while the Fender’s have a stronger low fundamental with less midrange. The pick is the only thing bringing out the midrange in the Fender’s which is how I could see it sounding similar. I actually prefer the picked Fender’s over the picked La Bella’s.

9050s live in between the good thumpy flats and the bell tone flats like TIs and LaBellas. I like the Fenders on PBasses but thats about it. The LaBellas are wonderful on your Mustang!
@stephenboutwell1012Ай бұрын
@@oldasrocks9121 Thanks! They came stock on the Mustang. Never had them on a P bass, though. They seemed to have good, low fundamental which I liked but lacked the mid-range punch of the LaBellas. The 9050s were fine, just not my style. However, when it came to a muted pick sound, I liked the 9050s better.
@oldasrocks9121Ай бұрын
@@stephenboutwell1012 My favorite thumpy flats are the DR Legends. Ernie Ball Cobalt flats live in this odd spot between flats and round wounds, flats for feel rounds for sound. But not quite like rounds sound wise. I have them on my jazz bass with foam mutes between the string pairs. They need cleaned regularly, the develop a rough-ish patchy corrosion but a swipe of Albolene with a good wipe after has fended that stuff off so far after it first developed. I keep them on but I'm still asking myself "do I like these?" Bandmates do so there's that.
@stephenboutwell1012Ай бұрын
@@oldasrocks9121 Interesting about the DR Legends. I have a set of those as well that used for a time. Here’s a cover of Bernadette I used them on: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2GYg52YfJaAgpIsi=54oTu4IBDudh300L I hear what you mean about the thumpy-ness, though I didn’t notice it at the time. Never played Cobalt flats but did play a set of D’addario Chromes for years. Aptly named, even after they broke in, they retained a glassy smoothness and clarity that I really liked.
@7171jayАй бұрын
With roundwounds that are a year old and using a compressors well there isn't as much if a difference in sound between rounds and flats as there could be. Considering these things the tone control provides more of a difference in sound than old dead rounds vs flats.

great playing and logging of process. I found your videos via looking for videos with Lollar high wound pickups in. As you have had them for a while now how would you describe them? I mostly play fingerstyle funk with roundwounds. very staccato kind of playing like a mix of rocco prestia and Paul jackson. I notice most of your music you like is motown based where you play with flats. I must say you nail the sound with considering you have a ash body and a maple neck. I have the same setup as you hence why i ask. cheers bud
@stephenboutwell101211 ай бұрын
Wow, thank you! 🙏🏻 I had the Lollars in for a few years and recently swapped them out. I’ve played them with rounds as well which I had on for my Stevie Wonder cover of For Once In My Life. The predominant quality of the overwounds is the low mids. They’re strong which makes them perfect for blues, soul, rock, and finger style funk for sure. My 70s ash/maple P bass has a decent amount of low mid resonance to boot so it felt a little overpowering to me at times which is why I swapped them out for something with more mid range punch and snarl which I think is characteristic of a 70s P bass. I’ve still got them and can’t decide if I want to sell them or try them in a alder/rosewood P bass. All around great pickups though. I have a set of Lollar Thunderbird pickups in a different bass and absolutely love them. Thanks for dropping in and let me know if you need any more info!

@@stephenboutwell1012 thanks for the detailed response. I can see you really gel with the basses you have and enjoy the music you play. I love how music takes you to a special place when playing. In a way for me it’s like meditation. On the lollars. My bass has a very bright attack and is very snappy. Rather similar to the characteristics you said your p bass has. Did the tone knob not help with taming the low mids? I find the ash body/maple neck def has a aggressive low mid attack. What did you change them to?
@stephenboutwell101211 ай бұрын
@@soulstart89That’s encouraging to hear. I love finding the sweet spots on my basses and yes, it IS meditation. Very therapeutic for me 😌 My P bass is a tiger and it is tough to tame, even with flats. The only way I can tame the low mids is with my volume knob! 😆 The tone knob only helped smoothing out the top end. With everything wide open, it’s a monster. You can really hear it in my cover of Bushwick Blues by Delta Spirit. Aggressive but really fun to play. When I first bought the bass, it had an old Dimarzio Model P probably from the late 70s or early 80s. It was hot, but a lot of the treble had gone away which is to be expected. Because I loved how the bass sounded when I first got it, I put a new Model P back in it and it is off the leash. It is officially my punk rock bass now 🤘🏻 as it should be, I think. If I need a mellow sound with flats, I will use my other bass but I’m in the market for an alder/rosewood P with a lower output to get some smoother tones that I can dig into without sounding aggressive. Hope that answers your questions. Let me know how else I can help. Thanks again!
@soulstart8910 ай бұрын
@@stephenboutwell1012 it did help a lot. I think a wind between the standard and High wind would be perfect. I may contact Lollar and see if they can cook something up for me. I have listened to the lindy fralins and they sound compressed weirdly. My bass is heading to the luthier for fret work and shielding so i can keep searching lol Oh i listened to your string comparison. The chromes tamed the attack but held some roundwound treble when you plucked hard. Hope you and family are well.
