In the 1930s my mother and her family drove to VB for a camping vacation; arrive in the middle of the night and pitched their tent. The next morning they discovered they were on the lawn of the Mayor. His wife brought them out coffee and biscuits. I started coming in 1979. My wife and I came in the 1990s. We and our daughter in the 2000s. Just there in August. 😊

I love the Mom and Pop motels.

This basically happened to many other beach towns everywhere besides Virginia Beach like Myrtle and Daytona Beach, these corporate hotels and motels are pushing out the smaller ma and pop hotels,so sad!We don't any longer live in a democracy,we now live in a corporate dictatorship..lol..!

Born and raised in VB 1980-2003. What fun to see some of the mom & pops I used to work at-- the Royal Clipper and the Golden Sands (gone). It's a sad day when the little hotels give way. What a great video!

I miss all those mom and pop hotels when I go back and visit now. A few left but not many. I was home ported in Norfolk from 81 to 85 and while deployed most of the time from spring to fall I would love spending a weekend or more in the off season month in one of the hotels that was still open for very little dough. I still find it very relaxing visiting during the off season times.

Stumbled across this. Have lived in Virginia Beach for 40+ years but this reminded me that I first visited from New York with my parents when I was around 13. Thanks!

My mother spent a "girls getaway" at the Princess Anne in the 40s. She has those forgotten memories of VA BCH. I moved to the area in the early 80s and have my own personal forgotten memories. 🙃

The Seahawk and The Royal Clipper I beleive are the only 2 that are. Although the latter has had a recent name change. It now goes by Sure Stay.

Killing me with the boardwalk train 😄 Too bad none of the Peppermint Beach Club; I'm old enough to say I had a beer there, when drinking age in Virginia was 18 for beer 😄

4:09 the boardwalk train 😄 Was reminiscing with my mom about this. She forgot, but I always wanted to ride it. Pretty sure we were so poor we couldn't afford the $.25 to ride it 😩 Really enjoyed this. Spent many crazy nights throughout the 80's at these old hotels. Emphasis on crazy 🤣

I was stationed at Dam Neck Guided Missile School from May 1969 till October 1970. Enjoyed two summers of Virginia Beach courtesy of the US Navy. I remember a lot of girls staying at the Golden Sands.

Reminds me of the time we went on the Christmas light tour where you put the cassette in your car and drove along the boardwalk. My favorite was the Giant Octopus. That was 23 years ago...

Nice video but it completely skips over the fact how Virginia Beach was a “Whites Only” city for most of its existence. The desegregation also fueled the economic increase in the 70s and 80s.

@@KoolSpool yeah, the Boardwalk and oceanfront specifically was whites only back then.

Should he have mentioned it? I guess in terms of historical accuracy, yes. Can't deny VB oceanfront was segregated back then. I think I read somewhere that a portion of the north end was a beach for African Americans.
