Why are you reviewing a wheel designed to slide if you dont slide? You have the exact wrong wheel.

This video has been very helpful thanks! I just picked up one of these used and really cheap, but possibly with a few issues... It rides great as a longboard, but it had the kingpin wrenched really tight, which I'm guessing might have damaged the bushings. It also has the top truck risers removed (the flat ones - but I do have them) - have you experimented with changing riser height, and should I add them back in? Cheers!

I haven't experimented but I did like to keep mine loose enough to get occasional wheelbase, so I'd prefer with the risers.

@@MarktheLandlockedSurfer thanks - I loosened the kingpin as you suggested in the video and it now works great, and no wheel bite with one riser in. Bushings are very squeaky but hopefully not damaged...

Thank you so much for sharing this Mark! I totally agree with everything you said and can definitely recognise my own obsession (ADHD like). One thing I noticed in myself is that although skateboarding helped me to keep going in dark times it also often only acted as a vessel/temporary escape and I did not fix the root cause of my issues and I got super angry/frustrated when I could not skate (due to weather or over-training). Now I am finally talking to a therapist which helps a lot. Currently I use my skateboarding achievements (landing a trick or the first competition) as something that can't be taken away from me because I earned it (in contrast to the seemingly never ending layoffs in tech) and that gives me a sense of security. Take care of yourself man!

I got back into skating 3 years ago after a 20 year break. It has been so good for my mental health but its all I could think about which would make me think " maybe those isn't healthy. Then I broke my leg skating and thought I would have to quit as I have a family to support. Now I am sat around watching skate vids thinking how could I give up ? Its in my blood. Fully addicted to everything skateboarding related 😂

I got a bad injury surfing before which could have been way worse / fatal had I been knocked unconscious by the blow to the side of my head that caved in my zygomatic arch. With kids and family I actually looked up whether it would be possible to quit surfing. It was something that weighed heavily on my mind. But I couldn't do it. I just made new ground rules for myself, and enjoy the smaller waves these days rather than pressure myself to progress. I wear a helmet if using a non foamie or if surfing in crowded lineups. I haven't surfed solo since. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I was really addicted to skateboarding but ever since I started working, I did not have time to practice tricks anymore. That got me really depressed. One of my problem with skateboarding is that you will lose the tricks you've learn if you stop skating for a long time. It requires practice almost everyday specially if you are a beginner to keep your tricks in your muscle memory. Even when I stop skating for a day, it will take another whole day of practice just to get my proper ollie back again. As a busy adult, I don't have time to learn and relearn the tricks again and again, it's very time consuming and I did not find it enjoyable anymore and leads to frustration. Then the pandemic came and I found out about Surfskating. It was Godsend! I was addicted again on the feeling of flow that the surfskate can give and one of the best thing about it is that when you learn the tricks like carving and slides, it stays with you even when you stop skating for a week. And you can have a blast even when riding just on flat ground. That's the boardsport I was looking for. It's perfect for me because I can just grab my board and enjoy riding right away on our driveway. I don't even need to put on my shoes since riding it barefoot offers the best boardfeel! I plan to build some long back ramps on my driveway to keep things more exciting since there are no skateparks in my area.

Skateboarding IS my mental health. When I’m not on the board regularly I struggle. Right now I’m taking a break due to a back issue and I’m trying to remain positive by keeping active with other low impact things. With ADHD can definitely relate to the addiction!

The whole reason I got into surfskating was due to an ankle injury that kept me from skating. I realized I could still pump on the surfskate, and it was fun to still have a way to roll around on a board. Stay positive and hope you find those other ways to keep that feeling!

I think any sport is a great help for mental health. Skateboarding has the added benefit of teaching you resilience and perseverance. If you don’t give up, you will eventually get it done. And it’s so rewarding once you land the trick…Because you had to work for it, it feels much better than the instant gratification you get from games and other entertainment… Another important aspect is pushing yourself to do something new and more difficult every time you skate. Going out of one’s comfort zone ever so slightly, helps in reducing your general anxiousness. And in the end there’s the “nirvana”feeling, where you had a heavy day at work and go for a skate and for an hour or so you just forget about the problems and are present in the moment, enjoying riding your skateboard. This is probably the closest I get to meditation.

Says a lot about Kelly and a lot about surfers in general. Im much more comfortable referring to myself as a skater as most surfers you meet (at least on the water) are dicks where as its the complete opposite with skaters. 😂

Cool video and thanks for sharing the experience. You mentioned you had a year-long break from wave surfing but continued to surfskate? Do you feel surfskating helped or developed bad habits that got in the way?
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Ай бұрын
I caught one of the best waves of my life and a few times that I thought I was going to lose it, it was the muscle memory of surfskate carving that helped me cut back down the face of the wave and stay in the zone. It isn't like it revolutionized my surfing, but it helped.

Hey Mark.. thanks for this. Started surf skate a few months back and just turned 45.. can I ask for some advice on knee pads, which ones are you using? They look slim line and less bulky..
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer

I think these ones were K2. They were slim but they could also shift when you slide and not actually protect your knees.

Thanks for the reply Mark and the honesty. I’m finding that knee pads are cumbersome and restrict movement.. probably more for when I can actually skate and do some tricks in the bowl… 😅
