We have had this bench kzbin.infoUgkxNuLbiXpLQ-mKH5NlyjrNe88hiCk2N3Cg for five years now and it is still holding up strong with minimal signs of wear! So much so that I decided to get another one to store other stuff. The first one is still beautiful, strong and is easy to clean. It’s been in our living room and we store toys and blankets in it and it really holds quite a bit of stuff. I purchased a similar one two years ago from Aldi and let me tell you that one fell apart in less than six months of use. Get this one if you’re looking. Seriously worth it. Five years already and I can’t believe it looks this good and has held up for the price! Awesome bench, the new one I just got is identical.

It’s been more than 3 yrs since, but no sign of sagging sat all. Kallax itself distributes the weight well.

Is there a risk of it sloping in the middle over time with just the 4 legs? I wanted to do something like this for my sideboard but it's full of heavy stuff and I'm worried about the middle sinking in
@uwo3ryota2 жыл бұрын
I thought about it, and I thought of adding another leg right in the middle. However, it doesn’t get much weight from how we use it and fortunately it hasn’t needed one yet since I made it. I would recommend you to have a hidden one if you are making one though.

Dumb idea. Totally destroys the idea of cheap easy-to-assemble furniture. If you have woodworking skills and access to some sophisticated woodworking tools, why would you build a quality platform with legs and then attach it to a disposable bookcase made from paperboard fibers? Kallax has its place. I have them in my home. But if I had your skills and tools...
@uwo3ryota3 жыл бұрын
Like you said some IKEA furnitures indeed have shorter lifespan if they aren’t treated well, especially like LACK and Kallax range with hollow cardboard core. I don’t consider them a disposable option though. The purpose of the build is that we wanted to have legs for it and it has been serving that purpose very well even with our kids pulling bags in and out for the past five years. I hope it lasts at least another five years at least. We love Kallax because, like you said, it’s cheap. Thank you for calling the legs I made a quality platform. The pallet wood I used was free, so it’s suitable for a cheap furniture. I learned new skills during the build and that’s half of the fun thing I do in my Free Time Creation. In regards of woodworking tools and skills, it could be your new hobby. Start small and gradually collect skills and tools as you go. Just like how I did over the last ten years. Woodworking for Mere Mortals #WWMM have such a great list of beginner’s guide and tool list. I highly recommend you to check it out if you are keen learn.

Wouldn't the L brackets work better, mounted from below, so they are holding the whole thing up, instead of screws getting pulled on constantly with additional weight making it worse?
@uwo3ryota3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree! It would have made sense. The thing is that these were meant to be fixed to the plates first (as seen in the drawing) but my Mrs didn’t like the look. L brackets had to be mounted to the top as I made pocket holes under the mounting bars and I had no place to put screws into.
@ronkopald3 жыл бұрын
@@uwo3ryota Eh, with the weight it has to hold I don;'t think the top mounted brackets will present any issues. Looks great! I want to try it!
@uwo3ryota3 жыл бұрын
Thanks@@ronkopald. You are right that we haven’t had any issue with kid’s clothes being piled up so far. A word of advice would be to have enough gap between the rack and the wall. As I initially planned to have a backing brace for the posts but they are omitted, we have about 15mm less gap. Have fun making it!

I just watch your video. Great hack BUT... maybe next time you can provide a list/measurements of pieces you made so we would know wood sizes, types, hardware etc.
@uwo3ryota4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Please refer to the SketchUp files which you can download from the descriptions above. 1. Use a circular saw to rip 2x4 material (old bed frame) into halves to start with using a straight edge. If you have a table saw or buy 2x2 material, that would make your life easier. 2. Us a mitre saw / drop saw to cut all of them to final length. A normal hand saw would have been fine too. 3. Sand everything starting from 100 grit down to 180 grit with a palm sander. Hand sanding with sanding block would also be fine too. 4. Use a Creg Pocket Hole Jig to make pocket holes hidden sides of beams and attach them with legs using some wood glue (didn’t film the glueing). Having a drill and an impact driver separately would speed up this process. 5. Varnish the legs with water based clear satin polyurethane. 6. As Kallax’s panels are hollow inside, use flat head screws (not countersink head) to attach the assembled leg to Kallax panel. 7. On separator panels, make some notches with a countersink bit to cater for heads of the screws. Hope it goes well for you too!

Why so much pain when simply can add leg to it
@uwo3ryota5 жыл бұрын
kirti agrawal Reasons for this design are: 1. I like to make stuff and challenge myself each time. I had to come up with a design with what I had ie free reclaimed pallet wood 2. Kallax is hollow inside the panels (only hexagonal cardboard materials) 3. Legs needed to be away from the sides and the back due to skirting for the our hallway and could not be flush with the sides. There are many other ways of adding legs for sure but this is the way that worked out very well for our household. Please let me know how your version works out if you make one.
