u cant install on center? is this affect the door structure?
@sdagley518 сағат бұрын
I just got an outward swing exterior door installed but he gouged the strike plate holes so decided to install a large security strike plate to cover the mess but now there is a bigger gap between my door and jamb compared to the rest of the door and frame. Do you think 1/4” is too big of a gap? The weather stripping does block the light/wind and it does latch.

I wish I saw this before my dad and I started our rehab job. He took apart the whole frame to fix the door 😂. Water under the bridge at this point but glad I found your very informative videos

Why would you not go to a local door manufacturer and get a plug and strap frame. …? Simple

Awesome random video recommended to me. I’ve always wondered what was behind metal jambs, or how they were secured into an opening. Sika flex has some really cool products. I used the their 29 oz tubes to fill the spaces between concrete slabs on my patio and garage before putting down a 2 part epoxy Finish. The gaps were really big so I had to do 3 applications to get them filled the way I wanted them to look. No other product I tried came close.

I can install those with no visible screws. And glass shops install these doors all the time.

Thanks for the video. Stupid fucking design. Who thought it would be a good idea to use regular threads on a bolt that constantly has tension and moves. Inevitably going to droop awkwardly

Instructions unclear I do not have a middle hinge😂
@askillthatpays6 күн бұрын
Not always needed. Here's general rule for a standard interior doors. Solid door should get (3) 3.5" hinges. If it's hollow, it only needs (2) hinges. However I've seen all kinds of configurations. Thanks for watching.

Why did u install the screen with the locks on the same side as the door? Once open, it cuts off the path of travel... seems as if it opened out towards the windows , it would allow for more room and a door stop or chsin could be added to stop it from hitting the house.
@askillthatpays6 күн бұрын
That is the standard installation. People rarely open a door fully. With this setup each door can be opened about 1/3 for easy access. It's very cumbersome to use if done the other way, however, so people choose odd configurations for spatial reasons. Thanks for watching.

what about doors that are hollow on the inside, can it still be done or it’s not a good idea?

This is why my Physics class put such a large emphasis on defining your coordinate system. In your case, (0,0) is at the top of the door, on the corner the door opens into (side with hinge pins). The frame goes into the negative, to give tolerance. Also helps that hinges are intentionally symmetrical to make this technique easier.

I've not heard the physics explanation because I always think of geometry. thanks for sharing and thanks for watching.

What closer brand did you have in video?
@askillthatpays6 күн бұрын
That is the Universal brand from Home Depot. I typically get the heavy duty or medium duty. High quality. This one was medium duty and works great for doors like this.

I ran into my sliding glass door, and jammed it against the tracking on the top...can I just pound it back in with a rubber hammer? Or should I do the screwdriver wedge?
@askillthatpays6 күн бұрын
Ouch. Rubber mallet might work but I'd try a 5 in 1 tool or something like a chisel to shoehorn that damage piece apart and stick a piece of wood or pry bar in there to get the bend out. Good luck and thanks for watching.

So if the hinges is on the outside it’s easy knocking the pins out and removing the door to gain access
@askillthatpays6 күн бұрын
Commercial hinges are typically "NRP." Non-removable pins. That's what we use in cases like this. However, some inside door knowledge for you, removing hinge pins to open a door is a complete myth. In 20 years I've never seen or heard it. Think about. It's hard enough to when you have light and tools and time and permission. AND even if you get them out, the door is often still impossible to remove if installed properly. Great question as a lot of people ask the same thing. Thanks for watching.

WD40? Not even. WD40 is not a lubricant, it is a water displacing chemical. Try a dry lubricant instead, PTFE or silicone works 50X better than the non-lubrication WD40 (weally dumb-40. it's right in the name). A piece of wood to hold the wheel out? Sure, if you want it to rot and fail in a single season..

What about the framing and stability of the interior wall? What if???????
@askillthatpays17 күн бұрын
Great question. Whenever possible, I try to put the hinges on the non-pocket side, but that's not always possible. By ripping a 2x4 and securing it in there, it's fine. Interior doors are generally light and smaller than entry and actually rarely used, so as long as you make a good effort, they'll be fine. I've never had one fail. Thanks for watching.
