My grandmother who was Hopi adopted into the Arapaho nation when she had remarried would make a sound similar. Women in the Cheyanne, Arapaho, Lakota and any nation in the Great Plains would make that sound in either excitement of someone accompaniment. They would make this sound during songs when they were really feeling the song. I can relate, because when he was dying, my grandfather was excited to go and meet Jesus and be free from suffering. Not really scared! Wow. I think it's good to remember that "maximizing engagement" as a platform (e.g. youtube or tiktok) isn't from a 'evil' place, as much as it's a simple metric to optimize for which at face value seems like a good idea. Like there is nothing measurable that a platform can optimize for to get a 'healthy' platform to use. Of course a platform can moderate, and I think moderation decisions should be factored more heavily into recommendation algorithims (don't recommend content that looks like content that was previously moderated to be removed), but attempts to do that have often backfired (with good content being pushed away as it covers controversial topics for example). The only alternative is having humans pick the recommendations, but that feels even worse. So take away: Minimizing time is absolutely a great idea. Just please don't think there is an 'easy fix' for KZbin, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook to 'be good'.
