I used to play in the Gables back in '84. The landlord was a fiddleplayer named Dick Tobin. He'd hate it if he was alone behind the bar, and couldn't come and join in. But sometimes he would anyway!

Great band, Camp house ballads was a great album, 1979. I think Chris Twomey passed away since. Always liked Jimmy Crowley and Co.

Gus McLaughlin, composer of this song went boating into the next life on 30th Nov. 2019 in his 95th year. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam ceolmhar. I'm sure he'd be very happy with this rendition.

Cool! I hope we can come play in the area sometime. There were quite a few great songs collected around Crandon and Rhinelander in the 30s.

Thanks for the info. It's even cooler for me having been on the Wolf River many times!

It was collected in Wisconsin from a singer named Warde Ford who said it was composed by Jerome Ford around 1900 on the Wolf River in Wisconsin. Ford based his composition on an older song called "Drill, Ye Tarriers, Drill." I added some words too.
