You have saved me from a hip replacement. I am a 75 year old woman who loves to garden and I’m constantly tripping on these tree roots. I now can save myself from that disaster. Thank you thank you thank you.

Good job much nicer and tidier and the tree benefits from the regular haircuts which keeps the roots healthy and pushes vigorous and healthy growth of the crown and hey new grass underneath! Greets from UK 🇬🇧

Big tip the root closest to the tree behind the grinding that you are doing. This will lower the surface area that the tree is exposed to get an infection and kill the whole tree. Good idea if you don’t want to break your back pulling them out

I use a reciprocating saw and cut the roots into two foot sections and then pry it up with a Gkutster Demolition bar. Back will with dirt and then lay down lawn seedsl

Your idea is way too much work. Simply dig around the exposed root. Take a reciprocating saw. And cut through the entire root in manageable sections. Then use your shovel to pry up the exposed sections. Backfill the gap with topsoil and appropriate grass seed. Keep the areas moist while the new see germinates Your done in no time at all. But grinding down the roots is too much work and time consuming. Work smarter not harder! 😅

I invested in one of those high-priced disks, and the process of shaving down the Silver Oak roots was incredibly time-consuming. It turned into a labor-intensive task that felt more frustrating than productive, especially since I had to deal with an electric cord that limited my movement. In hindsight, I realized that using a battery-powered reciprocating saw would have been much more efficient. Not only is it faster, but the blades for this type of saw are also more affordable, making it a far better option for tackling such tough work.

I used a sander like that to level some concrete I patched. That sander with the right wheel is better than a sawzall. I've cut notches in cast iron pipe to snake out line when no clean out was available, also to replace rotted sections fast.

This is brilliant. I have live oak roots that I have dulled axes and chainsaw blades on. That wheel is made for rock so the dirt shouldn’t dull it. I’m glad I accidentally came across this! Guess I’m adding one more thing to my things to get done tomorrow now.

I’ve used quinchlorac and surfactant on it and no results.I’ve waited 48 hours with no watering and no results . Do you have any suggestions?

You need to get an airspade and aerate around the tree and install a deep feeding/ watering pipe near the base of the tree.... the roots are spreading like that because it cannot find closer...... you are treating results... not problems.

THANK YOU…. I’ve got 3 Maple trees that are giving me trouble when I mow the yard. Wouldn’t a woodworking roughing gouge wheel work better than a masonry diamond wheel? But either way, thank you for this video. I’ve been scratching my head trying to figure out how to deal with these tree roots without killing these shade trees.

Need some help and glad you posted this video. Have very small lawn and tree in center of lawn has roots going out of each side. Saw your video and thought good idea, but one root is already 5 to 6 feet from my house's foundation wall. Thus my question is don't I need to cut that end of the root totally out of the yard so it doesn't damage my home? Price quote I received to remove the root nearest my house was $400 and honestly can't afford that so looking for a cheaper option.

This is a great solution. My issue is with roots headed toward the sidewalk/concrete damage, but used in combination with cutting some out and grinding others down, this should work well! Thanks for posting.

A cordless recip saw with a 12 inch ugly stick blade on it works too. Just cut through the root and pull it out. I have one of those dewalt disks, the recip saw works much better.
