An ex boyfriend of mine's father used to work as an assistant to conductor George Szell during his time with the Cleveland orchestra and had wonderful positive things to say about Szell's conducting. Brilliant! This music as a stand alone orchestral work is riveting thrilling and epic. It makes me think of a quest in a high fantasy epic (i.e. Lord of the Rings, Arthurian legends, Star Wars etc) it has that 'let's go on an adventure' thing going on. I can see how it influenced John Williams when he was composing the score to the Star Wars trilogy. The music even sounds like a horseback journey. One can almost see Siegfried on a horse blowing his horn, and see the Rhine river flowing as he moves along the banks. We see mountains and forests and high cliffs. This is a beautiful piece and when played right with the right pacing in this case swift, it's pure magic. This is just so epic!!!!

Strange the way we never see Gary playing from the front, maybe players feel in awe of him.
I love the beautiful expression on the young violinist's face right around 4'12". She seems to be experiencing a moment of "verklarung," as Wagner might have wished.

The score says 'Langsam' and 'Sehr Langsam', not Andante or Allegretto. Norrington is a bad joke. We _know_ that Beethoven and Wagner, etc., used vibrato.

I hate Wagner, such a shitty anti-semite loved by fucking Hitler. However, his melodies are intoxicating including Tristan und Isolde prelude.

I remember pulling my car off to the side of the road in the '80's just to hear this piece. As their were no Cell phones in public use at the time, I had to call the radio station from home to get the name of this work. A mere prelude to a following Opera?! Reminds me of my reaction to the Overture of the same Composer's "Tannhauser". Who needs more?! But I'll take it!
