Leann, Good episode for expanding the options for Canadians. I had a look at the Total Prepare website (totalprepare.ca/shop/kits/72-hour-kits-essential_premium-72-hour-kits/). Zenia does a great job of explaining the basics. These kits are a good idea, however, some of the contents are concerning. An entry level multiplier would be a superior multi-purpose tool to the knockoff Swiss army knife. The folding shovel could be replaced with a true compact shovel that does not fold, it will be stronger, albeit not as compact. As for the office/workplace kits they should include N-95 masks for breathing in the event of a building collapse. These kits are starting points, but folks should do their own research on what gear items would work best for them. Quality gear costs more. Cheers, Andrew.

Leann & Shawna, excellent interview/discussion. A lot of great communication points were brought up and explained. I agree with both of you that planning and preparedness are very important. Especially, planning for the loss of power and the means to communicate in the disaster zone. I wonder if either of you are familiar with wireless mesh networks?? I am learning more about them myself and have explored a company called goTenna who makes a product called Pro-X which allows for a text messaging capability from a cellphone without cell service by creating a wireless mesh network. If I am allowed to post a link to my blog, I have most of a school project there that explains a high level overview of how this technology could benefit emergency managers and disaster responders.
