Palmeteer was the reason they couldn't get over the hump. Then they traded Mcdonald and that was it.

I remember watching this on the old Sportschannel network back in 1989. One of the most exciting Game 7's I have ever seen. A forgotten classic.

2:22:15 may have been the loudest cheer ever in Tiger Stadium as Kaline gets the game winning hit. No more of those air horns from the Cardinal faithful.

The Soviets had talent well beyond that of the NHL, but these college amateurs beat them. That's why this is remembered as a remarkable and uniquely historic sport event.

All those ABC sports commentators were very versatile as they could announce just about every sport. Schenkel was mostly known for the Pro Bowlers Tour with Billy Welu and later Bo Burton. Schenkel was also the lead NBA announcer when ABC broadcast games in the 1960s and early 70s.

kentucky had to be the birthplace of girls trying some kind of an idea about basketball--the late penny ann early played one minute for the kentucky colonels--long before the wnba--and the announcer of this game did the spirits of st. louis--in kentucky, where the famous chicken hq appears!

Playing against the wishbone required discipline and assignment football. If you broke an assignment it became a track meet with the defense doing the chasing. Even today even though we don’t see the wishbone teams playing against the service academies have to prepare to play against triple option offense and it can give them trouble

Thank you to the host for taking the time to sync television and radio broadcasts. I've always preferred the radio broadcast to the audio commentary of the television broadcast.

I watched the game live on TV. Nebraska and OU were two of the earliest teams to dip into the veterinary medicine bag of tricks. Nebraska would bring in linemen and redshirt them for a year so they could put on "40-50 pounds". Anyone who has lifted seriously knows you don't put on that kind of weight (all muscle) in a year without serious help. Would be interesting to follow the health records of these players and see how many of them died young.

I can't even imagine how cold and snowy it was for Rich Karlis to kick the extra points, field goals and kickoffs in this frigid cold weather. I bet his toes back then were actually frozen (kicking with his Right Bare-Skin Barefoot). Still it was an awesome experience and I watched this game on TV way back in 1987. Rich Karlis (to this day) is one of my favorite barefoot kickers (2nd is Mike Lansford).

As a pats fan I was aware that the pats red uniforms had more colors on them than any other team, but I always liked the Browns too because they were the only remaining team in the league without any logo or design on their helmet at all, giving them the plainest uniforms in the league. 😃👍

These sportscasters are just awful. Example, when Tarkenton tried to block Joe Green in the 2nd quarter on a reverse play the announcer said "no contest" when Fran did a perfect job blocking Green. He also said Fran wouldn't do THAT again, when you know he would. And there are other examples as well. Dunces.
