I really enjoyed the experimental presentation of this project. For my ears, the 1/2 bore sounds better than the 5/8 bore. Great demo: I'll try doing one for my turning club.

I noticed it was kinda difficult to remove the mortiser; mine responded to a waxing quite well.

I am just starting out to make wooden automata and toys. What are the power tools I must have - like a scroll saw, belt sander, drill jig, table saw etc. to start with. Should I buy the cheaper equipment from Harbor Freight or more expensive online or Home Depot? I need your advice. Thanks.

Thank you for this tutorial. My husband brought me this exact saw for Christmas yesterday, and we couldn’t figure out where some of the pieces went because the directions did not include them.

Thank you! Laura Ingalls Wilder talked about a similar toy in her book The Long Winter, and I just couldn’t get a real image in my mind of what the toy would have looked like in action. Now it’s clearer!

There is a much easier trick to sanding the end and keeping it round. If you leave a little end of wood on the back. You can chuck it in a drill and use that on a piece of flat sandpaper. Go a little slow, but it will keep it round.

Super useful…love the artistic and useful end product. Love your workshop. What is the tool with the reciprocating saw blade and stand you used for cutting the wood near the beginning of video if I want to purchase similar?

I started stripping the screw head you loosened at 4:09. I eventually got it loose, after trying several Phillips head drivers, and then I replaced it with a better hardened screw.

Grind or file a flat on the prop shaft where it is epoxied to the prop. Should be a lot stronger against twisting free.

Hi Rick. I have the same saw. But I want to find out how kan I adjust the blade to cut square from top to bottom. As soon as I cut a piece of wood, then it is out with 1mm. Is there any possibility to assist me please. Hope to hear from you.
