I agree with Dee's comment on the bandage used to keep the jaw closed on a corpse. I worked in a hospital as an aide when I was young, and sometimes getting the body ready to go from hospital bed to the morgue requires binding the jaw to the head just like that.... I am no expert on farming techniques, but I have never heard of scythes being used to turn soil, only about their use to cut grain stalks just above the ground to enable drying the stems holding the grains, thus making it easier to winnow the grains , i.e., separate them from the plant stalks. Thus cleaned of the inedible (to humans) stalks, the grains can be dried and stored for later use through the year, keeping the people alive at least through the next harvest, and in good years, enabling sales of excess abundance to others who would perish without this bounty. Perhaps my understanding is "too much of a niceness", with my notion that to "turn soil" you need shovels/spades, or in modern times, wheeled soil turners/cultivators/combines.... A mental image that makes me realize suddenly that the skeleton in the Death card is not cutting down grain plants such as wheat, corn, oats, etc. Instead we see little broadleaf plants, not grain plants like oats, wheat, corn, or even rice. These images might as well be small lettuces or herbs, not grains at all. I don't know how to interpret that distinction, but looking at all these varied cards, it strikes me as something obvious that has escaped notice for a long time.

Great points Arya! I will reflect on the nature of the plants - very interesting. Perhaps the dual nature of the scythe is more reaping/harvesting vs killing (scythe doubling as farming implement & weapon)? Much more to ponder. I always appreciate your inciteful comments, thank you!

Thank you for sharing your process, really beautiful. I'm in my 60s and retired so I often go slow and take my time with readings (some I leave out all day), and I thoroughly appreciate using your We'Moon datebook as a check-in pre-reading; love it; I've been using We'Moon for nigh on 30 years now and it's become a precious, familiar, insightful companion. Again, this was wonderful, thank you. I tend to spend a lot of time reflecting and journaling after readings. Blessings!

Looking at the cards at approximately 17:30, you ask the question about "are we looking at the penis" or whatever: No, I don't think so, at least not in the cards you are showing... The fashion for a long time was for the leggings to have a "codpiece" or flap for the convenience of men to be able to urinate upright without having to drop their pants entirely. Fashions existed back then, and often the codpiece was colored differently than the leggings, thus accentuating the masculinity of the wearer via contrast. The higher the status of the wearer, the larger/gaudier/more emphatically eye-catching the codpiece was made to be (Royalty were particularly outrageous about this!). These fellows in the old Marseilles style tarots were sometimes shown as impoverished, but not always... If the codpiece had been removed in order to add more "shame" to the victim's experience, their flaccid genitals would likely have flopped via gravity, thus visibly pointing downwards to the ground. Or, the excitement (?) of being tortured might have made their genitals "stand up", but either way, the appearance from the onlookers' POV would not have differed much...

La Force XI Triumph. Jean-Claude Flornoy's book 'Seeing the World Tarot Signposts on the Path to Perception; describes: "Force. Key to the Arcanum: Self-Making within and through the World of Matter". This is as good a description as any. I prefer the title Force, not Strength because I like the meaning "bring about by unusual effort". Etymology ~ " From c. 1400 as "compel by force, constrain (someone to do something)." Meaning "bring about by unusual effort" is from 1550s;" but if I'm "constrain"(ed) then I don't object to "fortitude (n.) late 14c., "moral strength (as a cardinal virtue); courage,". By the 18th c. the image of La Force is "stabilising" in the historic Tarot de Marseille decks, and "The emblematic Maiden and Lion is the most familiar scene" Laetitia Barbier. Earlier images of 'brute force' include Samson or Heracles killing wild beasts in Italian decks. And Samson shattering the pillars of the Temple gradually disappears. Occasionally the Maiden holds or leans on a pillar but in the end " The Maiden isn't looking for supremacy by projecting her dominion on the Lion through aggression and mortal combat. Something more subtle is at play in this image, a subduing in which the beast keeps its integrity, an encounter where the energy is derived from negotiation, not strife" Laetitia Barbier. Their relationship develops, and is brought "about by unusual effort" both physical, mental and spiritual. Her Force or Strength comes from the 'infinite source' of Fortitude. St. Thomas Aquinas describes Fortitude as "an inner strength in which we courageously go toward what we fear, what might hurt us, in order to preserve the good". In her book Tarot and Divination Cards A Visual Archive by Laetitier Barbier, she comments "the Maiden and the Lion trope prevailed over time because it revealed something more profound", and not just the brute strength or aggressive force of Samson or Heracles.

La Roue de Fortune. The 10th Triumph, the culmination of the first cycle and the opening of the new decade. The Wheel of Fortune is a unique Trump because of what it is not. It is not a Virtue, Angelic or an Archetype it's just a Fact. It symbolises (typifies) the experience here on Earth. The inevitable 'widdershins' (counter clockwise) turn of La Roue de Fortune, and its progress leaves us with one choice, how do we respond? J M David, suggests in his book 'Reading the Marseille Tarot'. "There are, then, three distinct aspects that we are lead to consider in the workings of the wheel: the weavings appointed in the personal and social fabric of our individual lives; the vicissitudes of life’s random events; and the cyclical movement of the wheel’s turning, season by season, day by day. And our own individual response to the way in which these permeate our heart, our thinking and our will-force or acts." I appreciate your perspectives on the Tower. It's a given that towers provide protection, but I don't think I've ever considered that as it relates to the tarot Tower. Thank you! A Shining Tribe/Motherpeace deep dive would be incredible. I've spent some time with the Daughters of the Moon, but find the other two more balanced then Daughters of the Moon from a gender perspective. I think they would be a great pair to look at together.

Around the 36:20 point in the video, Sadhana, you point out that the naked and loosely blindfolded Fortune in the IJJ Swiss, who is turning her face away from the wheel she turns, and the well-dressed man at the top almost appears to be pushing his female companion off the wheel into the nearby abyss, and you had already even mused that the other figure on the right going down headfirst into the abyss might be their offspring… Well, (I do apologize for shouting, but I am compelled to do so) THAT’S WHAT MOST OF HUMAN HISTORY HAS BEEN!!!, right on up to the early 20th Century: the repeated cycle of women dying in or soon after childbirth, children often not surviving into adulthood, and husbands (who probably never would have ever wanted things to be so horrifying) would nevertheless find themselves repeatedly marrying again and again to replace their wives who died either birthing or in the first few months or years thereafter. Back then, it was not uncommon for wealthy or even just well-off men to be serially married to 5 or more wives through their lives, because the women would just keep dying to pregnancy and childbirth problems and diseases that few doctors had any clue as to how to save them from death or disability at all. No wonder women have historically been treated as disposable brood mares in so many places and eras. For all it visual elegance, this card cuts very, very deep. QUESTION: Can you tell what the flower is between Fortuna’s feet and the Wheel itself? I’m wondering it if has any specific meaning relevant to this card…

Powerful observations Arya (and I apologize for taking so long to respond. The comment somehow got buried.) I have the extra guidebook for the 1JJ Swiss, which names them as red roses signifying hope. It mentions that love and death are equally dispensed but makes no comment of any real significance. Your comment speaks to a series of linked articles from The History Jar shared in Dee's comment in particular a concept known as The Great Chain of Being. thehistoryjar.com/2021/02/16/the-wheel-of-fortune/ How sad/backward many of these historical perceptions are.

Dear Sadhana, whilst wandering around following The Hermit I found a link to "Lancelot in Exile". I know you have a fondness for Wales (the country in the UK), and in the future intend to study The Arthurian Tarot therefore this will interest you at least? www.tarotforum.net/threads/legend-the-hermit-lancelot-in-exile.35606/ I found the thread in 'Aeclectic Tarot', and it includes some stuff about The Hermit and lots about The Arthurian Tarot. But my Cornish husband would vehemently argue King Arthur was a Cornish man (if he existed) so you, and many others are way 'off the mark' about the Arthurian story hailing from Wales. Tintagel Castle in Cornwall is the Kingdom of Arthur 'The Once and Future King'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tintagel_Castle The Cornish are a very proud 'Celtic' nation, whatever that might signify? sinceen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celts#:~:text=Celtic%20cultures%20seem%20to%20have,also%20called%20the%20Celtic%20nations.) Here are a few more links including The Hermits Hour Glass and Crowley's take on this venerable gent. www.tarotforum.net/threads/hermit-with-hourglass.92693/ www.tarotforum.net/threads/the-hermit-ix.14103/ tarotwheel.net/history/the%20individual%20trump%20cards/el%20gobbo.html

Tyldwick and Herbcrafters were left on the shelf, but I definitely thought about including them. As a Pacific Northwest card, blackberry is so on point. When I go to Seattle or Portland, both cities have walls of blackberry brambles. They are impassable. Tyldwick is just a little dark for what I was going for in my video, I was trying for the lighter side of the "Lightbringer." 👹
