Nothing new 😊 but I think back in the days before any proper ways of getting rescue or help, people sailing lived with it. If something happens to the kids during the voyage there would no chance of getting help. Things can happen at home also. How did you think ? Ocean rescue is very expensive, dangerous if even possible to all parts.

Crappy modern boat design. You hit anything that is floating in the ocean, get a damaged rudder and sink. Definitely not a blue water boat design.

I don’t think they are playing. It is an intelligent choice to go for the rudder. Maybe they realized that breaking that will damage the boat severely and they don’t like the boats fishing around …..but maybe they hate the sounds the rudder or the boat are making. Giving them head ache or interfering with their “sonar “

Evidently, the rudder was broken off causing a hole on the hull. It doesn't need an orca to break off the rudder - it could have been a piece of driftwood. The problem was deficient/incompetent design of the boat. It is far from unusual for yachts to lose their rudders at sea - modern dagger rudders are very vulnerable. The area where the rudder enters the boat - the lazarette - should be isolated from the rest of the boat behind watertight bulkhead. Never buy a yacht unless this is the case.

Those are skeg rudders... NOT keel attached rudders. Juveniles are targeting them something to play with because they're "separate" from the keel. Sailboats with full keels that have keel attached rudders don't have the issue because these juveniles don't see them as "toys" to play with. What happens with a skeg rudder is they're plenty strong enough to grab the separate rudder and simply break it off (which can then hole the boat below the waterline). Yeah these guys have tremendous jaw power (over 19000psi).

Hi! My Volvo Penta 5D a 1982 doesn't have a coolant or sea water strainer. The previous owner told me that the cooling system has been modified to a freshwater setup, so I don't need to do anything. I also don't see any container where coolant could be added. Is it true that I don't need to do anything, or do I need to add coolant in some way? How is this monitored? I've also seen some MD 5 engines with a shut-off valve with a red handle on the lower left when looking from the back, but on my engine, it feels like something is there, but the handle is missing. Was it removed for some reason? Perhaps because of the change from saltwater to freshwater cooling? Could someone clarify this for me or provide a link where I can read more about it?

It's well known that only a certain family of orca's, is attacking the boats. They do this because in the past a boat, hurt one of their calves. It's mother is the leader of the pack and in those families, the rest follows her behaviour, no matter what.

Sorry for your loss. No matter what this event is always traumatic. We passed two times in orca alley with our Boreal 47.2 and got lucky to never encounter any orca so far. I don’t think that they could sink us, but I am not eager to try.

Can someone tell me why you can't toss a flash bang into the water and then repeat when Orcas or Sharks are harassing you or your Boat? That happens on a regular basis and the Pod of Orcas will give future boats a wider berth.
